McCarthy: protective headgear for pitchers likely available in 2014

Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon McCarthy spoke with Fox’s Jimmy Traina and told him that protective headgear for pitchers is likely going to be available in 2014. It won’t be mandatory — McCarthy and most other pitchers are opposed to that at the moment — but the fact that there will be an approved and available piece of equipment is pretty big news.

Traina got comment from an MLB spokesperson:

“One product that has passed the testing standards should be available to players for next season.  We are still evaluating a number of other potential products.  Our conversations with the MLBPA are ongoing.  We expect this issue to continue to evolve, but we believe this is an important first step.”

Comebackers are obviously a huge danger to pitchers, and we have seen many serious injuries from them in recent years. Most notably McCarthy’s. Having an option to get some protection from them is a good move by MLB.

Pitcher protection, no home-plate collisions…what next giant pink foam baseballs and styrofoam bats? Why don’t they just call it pansyball and be done with it?

Let me be the first to down-thumb this comment.

        Bunch of liberal crybabies

Yes, safety is such a liberal vs. conservative topic. The 30 big-money corporations are all for protecting their investment in fragile pansies it so they must be a bunch of leftist scum too, right?

Sarchasm (noun): The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn’t get it.

Dammit. I caught someone else’s sarcasm earlier today, but totally missed this one. I just QQ’d all over my desk.

It’s about time they implemented this. I like the fact that it is optional also, that way people can’t complain that they are being forced to wear something they don’t want to wear. 1B and 3B at least have enough time to react to line drives but pitchers are defenseless unless they make a lucky, reflexive snag.
