Pittsburgh picked up first baseman Chris McGuiness from Texas in exchange for Triple-A reliever Miles Mikolas.

Gaby Sanchez is around as the Pirates’ right-handed-hitting fallback option at first base in case they fail to land one of their primary targets and now they’ve acquired a left-handed-hitting first baseman in McGuiness to potentially platoon with him.

McGuiness hit just .246 with 11 homers and a .792 OPS in 104 games at Triple-A last season and also got into 10 games for the Rangers in his MLB debut at age 25. He has good on-base skills thanks to plenty of walks, but McGuiness is a career .257 hitter in the minors and lacks ideal power for the position.

And Gonzalez, Tex, and Davis enjoy a big laugh.

Umm, this would be funny I suppose if Texas was the team that had a hole at 1B …….. But in other news: Mark Teixeira strained both his obliques today while laughing at bad jokes.

Well this is going to make it more difficult for the mets to move Davis.

the pirates obviously feel that the talent they how , is good enough for them to continue until their younger players are ready. thats fine with pitching and the outfield. but I don’t see any options in aa or aaa for the infield, especially at firstbase.

You’re funny, Marc but your joke is like blowing Smoak up someone’s butt.

They are bringing in guys who can play the position, if nobody proves they are major league ready in spring training, they make a major move at first.
