The White Sox announce the signing of Scott Downs

Jan 2, 2014, 2:17 PM EDT

File this under deals that were basically done before Christmas but then everyone went home, ate too much, opened presents and then got back around it after the new year:

Downs, most recently with Atlanta, is coming off a season in which he posted a 2.49 ERA and 37/19 K/BB ratio in 43 innings between the Angels and the Braves. He’ll be a lefty specialist for the most part.

“Lefty specialist”? He was not a “lefty specialist” when he pitched in Toronto. He was an equal opportunity 8th inning shut down artist.

lefties will always have a job as long as they can reach the plate. anyone remember when they didn’t have lefty/righty specialist?? Downs is still a pretty good pitcher and should help but who is going to close for the Sox??? They traded away their closer so maybe they’ll give Downs a shot.

He broke a finger at the end in atlanta. He was less effective after that happened but i thought he did a great job and did not think of him as a left handed specialist by any means. I knew who he was having watched him on opposing teams but never appreciated him like i should have. His sinker seems to be less effective but it looked like he had a two seamer that he worked in in its place, so i would say he has some life left in his arm. Good pick up for the chisox. I was sad to see him go but you can count me as a fan of his now.
