Just A-Rod, Manny Machado and Yonder Alonso hangin’ at the Jay-Z show

Jan 3, 2014, 2:56 PM EDT

I’m sure the Orioles are thrilled to see the company the future of the franchise is keeping:

Or, perhaps, A-Rod is not quite the pariah around baseball that a lot of writers would have us believe.

  1. fearthehoody - Jan 3, 2014 at 2:59 PM

    All guilty of roids

  2. randomdigits - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:00 PM

Arod mentored Manny in the same manner in which Cal Jr mentored Arod.

Alonso is of course the brother of Manny’s fiance.

    • mikhelb - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:20 PM

Even further: Manny Machado has been coached by Alex Rodríguez since Manny was a teenager, Machado lived (or perhaps still lives) in the same area where Alex and his mom lived for years.

I doubt that nobody knew about that, Machado talks about that stuff in almost every interview, thanking Rodríguez for his help.

    • jm91rs - Jan 3, 2014 at 8:21 PM

Alonso has been hanging with a-rod since his university of Miami days.

  3. chacochicken - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:02 PM

50-50 Arod sidled into that shot.

    • skids003 - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:07 PM

      Beat me to it.

      4 goobers.

    • unclemosesgreen - Jan 3, 2014 at 4:06 PM

      photobomb!

  4. tfbuckfutter - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:02 PM

Is it “random” if MLB makes sure to test those guys a couple times?

  5. Jason @ IIATMS - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:02 PM

No ARod, no peace, I guess.

  6. tfbuckfutter - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:03 PM

He doesn’t name the fourth guy in the pic because he is their connection.

  7. rodge1 - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:07 PM

They all have a doctor’s appointment together after the show.

  8. NYTolstoy - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:09 PM

Haha yes A rod has two friends obviously proves he’s a good guy. Hell I’m sure even Castro has a couple of friends too. Let’s not throw a parade craig

    • alexo0 - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:15 PM

Why you gotta rip on Juan Castro like that?

      • mikhelb - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:24 PM

I’m sure nobody cares but still it is baseball news: Juan Castro (Juan Gabriel Castro) is managing a team in the Mexican Winter League, in his rookie season as manager he has one of the best teams and is in the playoffs with a 2-0 advantage over one of the powerhouses of Mexican Winter baseball.

Castro manages the Mexicali Eagles (basically my state’s team during winter baseball season).

      • NYTolstoy - Jan 3, 2014 at 11:27 PM

Lol yes I ment THE CASTRO. Cubas very own…you guys crack me up.

    • tfbuckfutter - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:22 PM

If anything I would say it shows a character issue with those choosing to be friends with him than it shows he is a likable fella.

      Aaron Hernandez has friends too.

      • mikhelb - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:42 PM

I don’t share that opinion, anybody can be friends with anybody and it doesn’t mean it is wrong, if they are not doing anything bad we shouldn’t care with whom somebody is friends with.

I guess it is a matter of time before somebody says something bad about Pedroia because his brother is a paedofile even when Dustin has showed he is a great person and his association has nothing to do with his character now the way he behaves.

    • anxovies - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:57 PM

ARod is a far better player. Castro couldn’t make it in the low minors and did the Walk of Shame back to Cuba.

      • mikhelb - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:31 PM

Are we talking about the couple of Juan Castros who only played in the minors (one from Venezuela the other from the DR) or the Juan Castro who played in minors and majors and is from México? The mexican Juan Castro has been a pleasant surprise in his rookie season as manager in the mexican winter baseball league, right now is in the first round of playoffs with a 2-0 advantage, trying to win the championship and play this year’s edition of the Caribbean Series vs Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominicana and Venezuela, to try and defend Mexico’s current status as Caribbean Champion.

      • cur68 - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:53 PM

mik, I think he’s talking about THE Castro. Fidel. Older brother of Raúl? Big beard? Hard to kill? Bay of Pigs? THAT Castro. The famous one. Not that the Castros you mention are not worthy Castros in their own right. I’m sure the Juans are fine chaps.

      • doctorofsmuganomics - Jan 3, 2014 at 7:35 PM

I dunno. I was sure he was talking about Jason Castro

  9. teamobijuan - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:12 PM

    Chunk up them deuces.

  10. Old Gator - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:18 PM

Did they get those mudras from Winston Churchill?

  11. shockgee - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:32 PM

What’s the deal with the whole finger gesturing in photographs? Cant anyone just take a normal picture without throwing up hip hop or gang signs anymore? Real easy. Smile. Cheese! Or wait, is it just some illuminati thing that us blue collar, working class folk don’t understand. I’ll take humble and humility over selling my soul.

    • unclemosesgreen - Jan 3, 2014 at 4:02 PM

They’re flashing the peace sign. Damn.

    • pbastille - Jan 3, 2014 at 4:09 PM

Its just a friendly game of Rock, Paper, Scissors with the photographer. I hope he took Rock.

    • Jason @ IIATMS - Jan 3, 2014 at 4:22 PM

that’s why I posted ^^^ “no ARod, no peace”. Sadly, my feeble attempt at clandestine humor remains clandestine.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:12 PM

Cant anyone just take a normal picture without throwing up hip hop…signs

Checks name, hmm shockgee, one of the rappers in Digital Underground…

      • cur68 - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:55 PM

Seriously? A rapper inspired screen name and he’s bitching like Clint Eastwood from Grand Torino over some peace signs? Coolio!

“Get off my lawn, mo-fo or I’ll line ya punk a$$ wit my nine!”

  12. sethb222 - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:43 PM

Cause 40 year old men with kids normally go to Jay-Z concerts with 21 year old guys…#Loser

    • ezthinking - Jan 3, 2014 at 4:00 PM

Does it help you know that Jay-Z is 44 years old?

  13. aphillieated - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:49 PM

Machado looks kinda like a squirrel

    • unclemosesgreen - Jan 3, 2014 at 4:01 PM

      Squirrel!

      / stares

  14. ctony1216 - Jan 3, 2014 at 3:56 PM

This is one of those times when HBT turns into “Mean Girls II”.

On a more substantial note, Mike Axisa is reporting at CBSSports.com that the Yankees will be spending big dollars on international players in 2014, sacrificing drat picks, financial penalties, etc.: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24392288/report-yankees-plan-to-shatter-international-spending-record-in-2014

    • ezthinking - Jan 3, 2014 at 4:01 PM

How’s the internship at CBS going?

      • ctony1216 - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:10 PM

The fact that the comment, “Manny Machado looks kinda like a squirrel,” got 3 likes pretty much sums up my point.

Baseball season can’t come soon enough.

      • tfbuckfutter - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:40 PM

Maybe he was helping identify which one was which.

From L to R: Fishlips, Squirrel, Beard-o, Nobody.

      http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1679235/

Please direct me to whichever screen name is owned by Tim Meadows. I have some ideas for Ladies Man 2, as well as a delightful script based upon his Census skit from SNL with Christopher Walken.

  15. nymets4ever - Jan 3, 2014 at 4:23 PM

I like A-Rod, nice to see him away from all the Biogenesis bullsh!t and just having some fun for once.

  16. mikhelb - Jan 3, 2014 at 5:36 PM

I am surprised nobody knows about Machado’s and Alex friendship: Manny Machado has been coached by Alex Rodríguez since Manny was a teenager, Machado lived (or perhaps still lives) in the same area where Alex and his mom lived for years.

Machado talks about that stuff in almost every interview, thanking Rodríguez for helping him develop his power, hitting and fielding. In an interview Rodríguez said he identified with Machado because both had a similar childhood and he noticed Machado’s talent since Manny was a kid.

    On a similar note:
David Ortíz and a myriad of other Dominican players are still being coached in the DR by a guy banned from MLB for his steroids connections: Angel Presinal, who got caught with a suitcase “full of steroids” in Canada.

    • deathmonkey41 - Jan 3, 2014 at 6:59 PM

Yeah, but David Ortiz smiles his fake smile and goes by the nickname “Big Papi”, so that’s not important.

  17. theskinsman - Jan 4, 2014 at 12:32 AM

Big Papi is still smiling from winning his 3rd World Series Championship in 10 years, and is laughing at you.

  18. beachnbaseball - Jan 4, 2014 at 8:16 AM

Manny will sign up with Jay Z and get out of Baltimore as soon as possible.

  19. kappy32 - Jan 4, 2014 at 1:55 PM

If Machado puts up Hall of Fame numbers during his career, I can almost assure you that some BBWAA voters will use this picture as evidence of him “cheating.” I highly doubt Machado has taken anything, but the sad truth is that the picture above is stronger evidence than what the voters have against some of the guys they’re keeping out right now. Absolute sham the voting process is.

  20. gymtruthteller - Jan 4, 2014 at 9:20 PM

Can’t wait for Machado to test positive. Him and Davis are cheaters

  21. 950003cups - Jan 5, 2014 at 9:33 AM

Why does it look like ARod just popped his face in the pic while those two were posing? So, anyway, who’s the scallywag who took the pic and let ARod have it?

  22. scoutsaysweitersisabust - Jan 9, 2014 at 8:29 PM

    http://eutawstreetreport.com/manny-machado-alex-rodriguez-photobomb/

Quick update. Looks like A-Rod photo-bombed. Really good to hear Manny is smart enough to know hanging with Alex is probably a bad idea.
