HBT Extra: So who’s gonna make the Hall of Fame tomorrow?

Jan 7, 2014, 4:00 PM EDT

Kay Adams and I talk about that. I got four: Maddux, Glavine, Thomas and Rush. Maybe they didn’t have a Led Zeppelin peak, but they certainly had a Jack Morris consistency.

And complicated time signatures too.

  1. stoutfiles - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Maddux, Glavine, and Thomas. Biggio next year.

    • dcfan4life - Jan 7, 2014 at 6:17 PM

Biggio this year i think, barely tho. No matter, hes in eventually regardless.

      • Kevin S. - Jan 7, 2014 at 7:33 PM

It matters because he’ll take up ballot space next year and there’s no indication of the ten-vote max being lifted.

  2. xdj511 - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:18 PM

Oh, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For years people railed about how bands like Rush, Heart, and Kiss kept getting overlooked. Now they’re all in. Next up… the case for Weird Al Yankovic.

    • Tim OShenko - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:09 PM

I’d say Kiss is the Jack Morris of the R&R Hall of Fame, but Morris had at least one good game.

      • dluxxx - Jan 8, 2014 at 9:34 AM

I wish I could thumbs up that comment twice, because it’s worth a “Deuce.”

      • yahmule - Jan 8, 2014 at 10:14 AM

Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and Stevie Ray Vaughn aren’t in there, but those merchandise peddling hacks in their clown makeup are enshrined.

  3. largebill - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:20 PM

Until I saw the stupidity of Gurnick’s ballot I thought Biggio would make it this year. Now I doubt it. Takes three good ballots to make up for each idiot.

  4. cur68 - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:22 PM

Of course, Rush. What’s the matte with you?

    • raysfan1 - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:55 PM

I prefer a high gloss to a matte finish.

      • cur68 - Jan 7, 2014 at 6:03 PM

        ®ight. Me too

        edit function?

      • raysfan1 - Jan 7, 2014 at 6:35 PM

Naw, I think I prefer the comedy of errors. I make plenty of my own too.

  5. rbj1 - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:28 PM

Maddux, Glavine & Thomas. Gurnick won’t vote for Rush because they played during an era when performers used Recreational Enhancing Drugs. So his ballot stops in 1962.

    • xdj511 - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:36 PM

1962? I’ve read interviews from musicians who said that they experimented with recreational drugs like marijuana and heroin way back in the 1920′s! Who knows how much of music’s history is tainted with drug use. Gurnick probably thinks that Little Richard is the only one eligible because the majority of his career took place before 1962.

      • rbj1 - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:47 PM

Oh yeah, but that’s never going to stop the ignorami. Lots of jazz musicians (even Ray Charles!) did heroin because Charlie Parker did heroin and was amazing. Ergo heroin makes yo an amazing jazz musician.

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:57 PM

Who knows how much of music’s history is tainted with drug use

        Umm, all of it?

      • Kevin S. - Jan 7, 2014 at 7:21 PM

        Your sarcasm detector break too?

  6. mianfr - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:32 PM

Just Greg Maddux, and on only 85% of the ballot, because this whole thing has gotten so stupid that it’s inevitable something like this happens.

  7. Ben - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:38 PM

    Obvious troll is obvious–Rush sucks.

  8. tcostant - Jan 7, 2014 at 4:38 PM

    Maddux, Glavine, Thomas and Piazza.

  9. musketmaniac - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:20 PM

    R n R n BB. nice conversation

  10. musketmaniac - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:22 PM

And the gold run thru his veins, like a thousand railroad trains….. John Pride

  11. musketmaniac - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:44 PM

    prine

    • raysfan1 - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:58 PM

      Hester Prine?

Some will sell their dreams for small desires and lose the race to rats, get caught in ticking traps, and start to dream of somewhere to relax their restless flights – somewhere out of the memories of lighted streets on quiet nights.

  13. disgracedfury - Jan 7, 2014 at 5:48 PM

Jack Morris like Mussina should get certain points for picthing in hitters parks and in the AL.

Greg Maddux was always a hall of famer but if he came to the Yankees he wouldn’t have gotten 4 cy youngs,300 wins or that Era.Like Schilling and Glavine they were just NL picthers.

Also if you take Glavine and Pettitte and switch there teams around they would have had switched careers.

    • Kevin S. - Jan 7, 2014 at 7:23 PM

Jack Morris pitched in neutral parks in a fairly extreme pitchers’ era, sans three seasons towards the end of his career. He should *not* get certain points like Mussina for where and when he pitched.

      • vikesfansteve - Jan 7, 2014 at 9:00 PM

What? You forgot about 87 called the juiced ball year. Revisionist history. Also it only took Craig 1 blog to bash Morris again after he said in the last one he was done doing that.

Glavine, Maddux, Piazza, Bonds, Raines, Thomas

      • Kevin S. - Jan 7, 2014 at 9:03 PM

The three seasons “towards the end of his career” I was referring to were ’87, ’93 and ’94. Nice try.

    • cackalackyank - Jan 7, 2014 at 7:59 PM

The 2004 Red Sox disagree with your assessment that Schilling was “just an NL pitcher”.

  14. bostonboresme - Jan 7, 2014 at 6:16 PM

RUSH IS THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL-TIME.

  15. villain612 - Jan 7, 2014 at 8:05 PM

If Greg Maddux doesn’t get the vote of 100% of the sportswriters, that would be further proof of the idiocy of HoF voters.

Top 5 pitcher of all time.

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Jan 8, 2014 at 9:20 AM

He’s not, a voter has already admitted he’s not voting for Maddux. Check out some of the previous stories on this site.

  16. janessa31888 - Jan 7, 2014 at 8:06 PM

Last year when the announcement was made I was sick in bed with flu/bronchitis. Between coughing fits I was glued to HBT, completety stunned that no one got was elected. I hope we actually get to talk about who went in this year.

  17. jacobknicks - Jan 7, 2014 at 9:38 PM

    Kay Adams is pretty

  18. bostonboresme - Jan 7, 2014 at 9:49 PM

    You’re pretty.

Peak years do colour people’s judgments. When the singer loses their voice, or the records get weaker, a lot of people will hang on for a long time afterwards.
