Astros sign Cesar Izturis

Exciting day for utility infielders!

First the Phillies signed Ronny Cedeno and now Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Astros have signed Cesar Izturis to a minor-league deal.

Izturis spent last season with the Reds, hitting .209 with zero homers and a .530 OPS in 63 games at age 31. He’s one of the worst hitters of this era and hasn’t topped a .650 OPS since 2004, but obviously teams don’t have Izturis around for his bat.

He’ll try to win a bench job during spring training.

Gotta say I don’t think they solved any problems with that move.

Nothing but a minor league, just Incase contract… Has little chance to make the team.

Altuve, Villar, and a few prospects they would like to watch/showcase.

Marwin, Pasedas, Guzman… Kind of packed up the middle.

Signing Cesar Izturis is the last refuge of the damned.

Hey didn’t he play for the Cards when Jocketty was still GM? If he did once again Jocketty is signing old Cardinals retreads.

Is Jocketty subcontracting out with the Astros? They could probably use the help.

Jocketty is in Cincinnati. Former Cards exec Jeff Luhnow is running the Astros.

Something something blue jays, something something old guys.

    Am I doing that right?

.209? Sadly, he will fit in just fine here. Hopefully Villar develops and this signing doesn’t matter.

I thought the Astros were trying to show they were making moves to be competitive this season? why in God’s name would you sign this clown to even a minor league deal? as reds fan I say thank you though as this means walt can’t waste any money on resigning this automatic out. of course this means his search of retirement homes looking for ex-cardinals to overpay will heat up.

It’s not that big a deal one way or the other. It’s a minor league deal. He is there if they have an injury or need late inning fielding.

      It just doesn’t help much.

Izturis can still pick up a ground ball and throw it to first base, a skill that could be useful if Jonathan Villar struggles, as he did last season. Villar has great skills but was rushed a bit and needs to show more consistency in his game. Long term, no one should worry about the Astros at SS; Carlos Correa will take over and give the team it’s best shortstop play since the pre-beaning Dickie Thon…..
