The Royals have re-worked Jeremy Guthrie’s contract

Not every team can have MLB swoop in and relieve them of $27.5 million of payroll obligations. Some teams, if they want a little more breathing room, have to rework deals a couple million at a time!

Joel Sherman reports that the Kansas City Royals have done just that, reworking their contract with Jeremy Guthrie by adding a $10 million mutual option for 2016. Now Guthrie will make $8 million in 2014 rather than $11 million and his new mutual option will include a $3.2 million buyout. It’s the same amount of guaranteed money as the originally-agreed-to deal, it just frees some up on the front end.

And don’t think Scrooge McLoria failed to take notice of anyone who would let his upfront money be backloaded like that. Too bad the Feesh don’t have Tweeter to sweeten a deal anymore.

Looks like the Royals are trying to free up some money to make one more move. Got to love their chances this year, wonder if they go after a starter. Gonna like watching the Royals this season, I always try to fit in 15 20 games a year from other teams, and hope the Royals are competitive. Baseball’s almost here people woop woop

Dayton Moore does love his mutual options.

Doesn’t look like Jeremy got much out of the deal. Maybe he figures a little good will won’t hurt come option time.

It won’t hurt. It won’t count for doodly squat either.

I’m sure you are right, OG. But then there’s not much else in it for him.

Il give you 25 million reasons why I think he got something good out of this deal. Party at his house!

They way I see this deal as a long suffering royals fan is 1 of 2 ways. The bad way is the rumors are true they are financially taped out and are pinching pennies. Not really shocking given the ownerships previous handling of finances in other years. The good would be trying to free up money by doing this plus trading wade Davis and Luke hocavear would save u about 13 million and make room for a 1 year deal with Santana. I know u guys will say Santana wants a long term deal but its 30 days till camp breaks he may not have the long term deal he wants and signing a 1 year deal with the royals may spring board him to the deal he really wants next yr when everyone isn’t waiting on a Japanese pitcher to make a decision.

I hope you are correct on your second point kcrobert

Looks like they are moving money around for a longer term deal for Hosmer.

    • Tyree Studio - Jan 13, 2014 at 4:41 PM

With Hosmer being a Boras client I would be shocked if he signed any kind of extension with KC.

Teams will be raking in the dough from TV deals that’ll be starting in ’15 and ’16 e.g. TEX, PHI, LAD etc. including the one MLB signed with Fox, ESPN, and TBS. Boras is slobbering knowing there’s going to be historically silly money being thrown around during the next few offseasons.
