UPDATE: The Phillies sign Bobby Abreu

Jan 21, 2014, 2:28 PM EDT

UPDATE: It’s on. It’s on like Donkey Kong:

Who says you can’t go home again?

2:28 PMJim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports on a possible reunion of old friends:

The Phillies, still looking for a left-handed bat to come off the bench, are “sniffing around” on Bobby Abreu, multiple baseball sources tell CSNPhilly.com.

Abreu has not played in the bigs since 2012 — and he stunk then — but he’s been putting up big numbers this offseason in the Venezuelan Winter League, hitting .322 with three homers, 28 RBIs and a .877 OPS in 50 games. He’s probably worth a look in camp, especially considering all it will take is a minor league invite to get him to Clearwater.

Allen and Schmidt may be worth taking a look; they can’t be any worse than Abreu.

“You wanna watch Antiques Roadshow?” “I thought the Phillies had the night off.”

    Isn’t Abreu a little…….young for this team?

Craig, I hope you are taking notes here. THIS is how you troll Phillies fans.

    Well played, Ruben… well played.

I want to watch at least one Phillies game just to see Abreu dribble a trail of piss as he goes from home to first on a walk.

I hear Ruben Amaro, Jr., is going to sign another utility infielder . . . Ruben Amaro, Sr.

Sadly, this hardly increases the Phillies’ average age at all…

In other news Roy Halladay got an invitation by Philly to Spring Training.
