The Orioles signed Aaron Laffey

Jan 23, 2014, 4:28 PM EDT

He’s not Grant Balfour, but when you’re the Orioles the real test is whether the guy can pass the physical:

Not exactly the sort of starting pitching splash O’s fans were hoping for, but he’s basically free. Best case: 5th/emergency starter. Likely case: organizational depth and that guy you call up when you’ve had three bullpen heavy games in a row and need a mopup dude at the ready. Worst case: he pitches like he did last year and is released in March.

Personal Claim to Fame: Able to squirm his way out of contracts to Grant Balfour and Tyler Colvin on the slimmest of pretenses. Signed marginal at best Aaron Laffey to minor league while continuing to flirt with Fernando Rodney in what most O’s fans think will be unmitigated disaster.

On top of that who would take a physical with the O’s and damage
any chance of signing else where.

I agree, the way that the “O”s handled Balfour and Colvin was a black eye for the Orioles. However, a Fernando Rodney signing could work out well for them. Last year was not his best year. But he clearly has talent and upside. Let us not forget that his 2012 season was one of the best of the decade.

Minor leaguers take their physical when they report.

I wish the bluejays kept this guy, I loved seeing him come into the game with his gas can!
