The Mets are talking to Fernando Rodney

The Mets were reported to have pursued Grant Balfour before he signed with the Rays and now they are reported to be talking to Fernando Rodney. Adam Rubin of ESPNNY has the report.

This further suggests discomfort with handing the closer’s role to Bobby Parnell. Which makes one wonder why they let LaTroy Hawkins walk away. But hey, that’s ancient history now.

Rodney spent the past two seasons as the Rays’ closer. In that time he’s saved 85 games with a 1.91 ERA with 158 strikeouts in 141.1 innings against 51 walks.

If the Mets are doing all of this, why in the world wouldn’t they just sign Drew?

You have all this young pitching coming up, you’re looking to invest in a Closer it seems, and you signed Grandy to a big contract. Why not get the best SS available, one that is elite defensively, in his prime, and can help your young team take the next step?

    The Mets are interesting.

Hey, Fernando. This is Sandy. I hope you’re having a swell offseason. I went to the winter meetings in Florida. The Wilpons didn’t give me any money to spend. What a drag.

Anyway, let me know if you’re in New York over the summer. We can have lunch or something.

By he way, we can afford to offer you a minor league contract if you are interested.

2012 was great, but I think 2013 is more reflective of what any team that signs him should expect–a guy who (when he’s on) can shut down anybody but when (when he’s off) can be truly awful, with no lead being safe. There does not seem at times to be much in between with him. Fortunately the good games outnumber the bad, but I was always nervous when he took the mound.

Yeash. 1st — Parnell is the closer. They are not uncomfortable with him. They’re trying to address the what if Parnell isn’t ready for the start or has lost velocity due to his neck surgery. If he’s healthy, he’s closing.
2nd — They’re not interested in giving Drew multiple years. Market may force that he takes a one year deal and they’re willing to wait that out. If Drew would take 1yr @ $10-12M he’s a Met tomorrow. But Drew turned down BoSox 1yr @$14m qualifying, so game of chicken continues. Probably goes back to Boston on 1 yr deal, takes wins over playing time.
