Jeff Fletcher of the OC Register reports that David Freese avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.05 million contract. That’s the midpoint between the $4.1 million the Angels offered and the $6 million Freese wanted.

He’s going to have to improve if he’s to be worth that money. In 2013 he hit a meager 262/.340/.381 with nine homers.

Thank God for the Angels. We need someplace to send our slightly broken down and older players to have their payday.

Good for David, I wish him the best and will miss him on the pizza commercials.

    That’s awesome, good for DF.

And may the Imo’s commercials run forever.

Freese made about $3M last year. How exactly would he have justified a doubling of his salary in arbitration? Increase in the cost of living? A level-up in Veteran Presence?

It is the system they have. Considering that teams have up to 10 years of control of players BEFORE they even reach arbitration and up to 13 before they reach FA, over the course of his career, Freese has still been way underpaid.
