With the entire sports world focused on the Super Bowl and the Olympics, this just smells like it’s going to be another slow day. So I don’t have any compunction over linking to a story from 1973 about comedian Jerry Lewis, then 47 years old, playing first base for the Astros in an exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers. He even got a hit. There are pics there of Lewis in what I feel like were the best Astros uniforms of all time, too.
50 year-old coaches for each team did the pitching so it’s not like Lewis took Mickey Lolich downtown or anything, but that’s still pretty impressive. Not quite as impressive as I thought the movie “Hardly Working” was when I was eight years-old, but impressive all the same.
