UPDATE: Maybe the Mets have made an offer to Stephen Drew, maybe they haven’t

Feb 4, 2014, 2:53 PM EDT

UPDATE: Or maybe not. Someone is wrong:

2:53 PMWFAN host Mike Francesa said on his show this afternoon that the Mets have made an offer to free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew. Francesa says that the sides are negotiating over years now, so it’s obviously not done, but there is an offer on the table.  Earlier this winter the Mets were said to be averse to anything beyond two years for Drew.

This comes less than a week after Sandy Alderson said that the Mets were “unlikely” to sign Drew. Though, really, he would be a fantastic upgrade for them. Drew hit .253/.333/.443 with 13 home runs and 67 RBI in 124 games.

When the price comes down, Alderson listens…

Holy underpants! It’s lik we’re at that moment where Frodo and Sam reach the base of Mount Doom! So close to the end of our quest…

Sigh, now I feel punk’d. Wake me up when he signs somewhere.

Relax. Its just Gollum jumping out at you. Soon they’ll be at the lava….

The NY Mets signing Drew is beneficial on two fronts:

    a) It gives Cherington another high draft pick to add to the Sox’ loaded farm system

    b) Keeps Drew from potentially signing with the Yankees.

Francesa also said that Denver couldn’t loss last week…

      he actually picked Seattle.

Francesa then spent 9 minutes trying to put behind-the-head earmuffs on over his head.

Jesus, I still can’t believe how entertaining that awful video was.

Drew is not that good. Why is everyone acting like he would be a major acquisition? If he goes to the Mets they still suck. Pretty bad.

    • pastabelly - Feb 4, 2014 at 5:14 PM

Drew is a very solid defensive shortstop and was actually one the more productive ones from an offensive standpoint. Nobody is suggesting that he would be an upgrade over Hardy or even a Bogearts, but he’s a much better option than what the NY Mets currently have.

His D is vastly overrated. Check his injury history. Sure he’s better than Ruben Tejada. But for the money give me Tejada. Drew is way too expensive for what he gives you. Mets suck anyway so why waste the $$?

The way it looks right now at least to me is that Drew has nothing to lose by waiting until the amateur draft to sign with another team. By then he will NOT be attached to a draft pick so whichever team wants to sign him will not be giving up a draft pick AND he’s probably only going to get a 2 year guaranteed deal in the area of $20 to $25MM total anyway. I would think he might be able to get a 3 year deal from some team by waiting this thing out if a team doesn’t have to lose a draft pick to sign him. Just my opinion.

    • happytwinsfan - Feb 4, 2014 at 4:30 PM

i forgot about the possibility of waiting for the amateur draft. i think you’re right. the only motivation a team would have to sign him before then would be if they felt they would be out bid once it got to the amateur draft.

thank you. now i will begin enjoying the illusion that that’s the game the twins are playing.

there are some teams whose motivation to sign him now might be to win games in April and May. Some teams believe those games count too.

The more time goes on the more likely it is he will sign a 1yr/ $10m deal with Boston. The Sox are playing a great game here, they want him back but don’t need him. I am sure the Sox don’t want to go into next season with Bradley, Bogaerts and Middlebrooks in the lineup. Drew at SS, Bogaerts/ Middlebrooks at third. If Middlebrooks can prove himself, Bogaerts moves over to SS and Drew can be traded if need be, or stick around for added depth. Drew will take a 1yr deal if he has to because it gives him a job, and there is no way the Red Sox offer him arbitration next year.

Gammons and Francesca said they think the mets will sign drew, theres no benefit for the mets to let anyone know if they made an offer, mets are just posturing it seems

Gotta put on a good show for the paying customers.

You guys don’t follow politics. So, “at this time” which could easily mean we made an offer and they rejected it, so we don’t consider it on the table “at this time.”
