Astros, Jerome Williams finalize one-year, $2.1M deal

Feb 5, 2014, 10:01 PM EST

It was reported Monday that the Astros had agreed to a contract with free agent right-hander Jerome Williams and now the deal has been made official. Via Chris Cotillo at MLB Daily Dish:

Williams will be a frontrunner for a rotation spot this spring in Astros camp. He was non-tendered by the Angels in December after posting a 4.57 ERA and 1.39 WHIP across 169 1/3 innings in 2013.

The 32-year-old owns a 4.35 career ERA and 1.35 career WHIP in 776 1/3 major league frames.

We have already kicked this around, but it is clearly a depth move. I have no idea whether he will end up as a starter or reliever, but I will almost guarantee that he is needed in one or the other – if not both – before the season is over.

Have heard some people worried that Williams will “block” some young pitchers….on a team that has lost 100+ games 3 straight years and had a historically bad bullpen last season, if Williams really does “block” someone who has really earned a chance in the majors, then it’s a great sign for the Astros rebuild…..

now I see why the jays didn’t sign him, if it was a even 2 mil maybe, but 2.1? Naa its not in the budget!! SORRY!
