UPDATE: Rangers sell ballpark naming rights to Globe Life Insurance

UPDATE: Nope, not a Korean company as many speculated. The naming rights are sold to Globe Life Insurance Company. So get used to people referring to Rangers home games taking place “at the Globe.”

6: 11 AM: Rangers Ballpark in Arlington is one of the more boringly-named stadiums in baseball. Boring is nice, of course. It’s worked fine for the Yankees and Dodgers for years. But it’s certainly not the norm anymore, especially for newer parks like the one the Rangers call home. And, starting this season, it won’t be the case for the Rangers either. They’re going to announce a naming rights partner today.

What will the park be called? The Dallas Morning News has an idea:

According to one baseball source, the Rangers had been talking with several Korean-based companies this winter, including electronics giant Samsung. The possibility of such a deal could only be enhanced by the presence of Korean-born outfielder Shin-Soo Choo.

I assume there is a big company in Korea named after the most common family name in Korea: Park. But I also assume that we’re not lucky enough to have something so awesome as Park Park. Which is a shame, really.

Neil “Diamond” Mitsubishi “Sam Sung Blue” Park in Arlington

    * Mitsubishi means three diamonds

  2. tuberippin - Feb 5, 2014 at 6:34 AM

Rangers Stadium at Chan Ho Park.

  3. spudchukar - Feb 5, 2014 at 8:40 AM

    Power Rangers!

  4. tysonpunchinguterus - Feb 5, 2014 at 8:42 AM

I’m still holding out hope that Ballpark hotdogs will be the mystery corporation that swoops in at the last minute.

  5. sdelmonte - Feb 5, 2014 at 9:01 AM

Given the news of a movie based on a certain old cartoon:

Chip and Dale’s Rescues Rangers Park.

  6. umrguy42 - Feb 5, 2014 at 9:28 AM

Park Park is ok, but how about Park Field?

  7. rje49 - Feb 5, 2014 at 9:44 AM

Here comes one more baseball stadium to not know who plays there. Can anybody name all current ballparks’ names? This baseball fan of nearly 60 years can’t.

    • icanspeel - Feb 5, 2014 at 9:52 AM

Sadly I can.. Their promotion pays off anytime I tell someone I am going to Petco Park or Coors Field or.. you get the idea.

    • cohnjusack - Feb 5, 2014 at 11:57 AM

Just start listing off the names of Banks. You’re bound to end up with at least half of them.

  8. Jonestein - Feb 5, 2014 at 11:54 AM

No thanks. It will always be The Ballpark in Arlington to me (though, Rangers Ballpark in Arlington was also acceptable before this latest corporate sponsor naming crap)

    • metroplexsouthsider - Feb 5, 2014 at 1:49 PM

I was sooooo hoping for “Jerry Jones Ballpark in Arlington.” Because that’s the only way Jethro’s going to get his name mentioned in the postseason for years to come.

  9. cohnjusack - Feb 5, 2014 at 11:56 AM

*Sigh*. Must everything be named after a corporation? Can’t we go back to the good ol days when we called ballparks things like “Busch Stadium”, “Wrigley Field” and “Fenway Park”?

    • Francisco (FC) - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:23 PM

Err.. two of those three are actually corporations.

      • sophiethegreatdane - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:32 PM

Enable the sarcasm detector in your browser.

      • Francisco (FC) - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:36 PM

Yeah I thought that after I posted, I completely forgot about Fenway Realty Company. I would have got it the first time had I remembered that.

  10. Old Gator - Feb 5, 2014 at 11:59 AM

The Globe. Has a nice Shakespearean ring to it. Hark! What fright when yonder curveball breaks!

  11. stex52 - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:01 PM

Yeah, old Bill Shakespeare ought to be spinning the ground over that one.

I’m one to talk. “Minute Maid Park”??

    • Old Gator - Feb 5, 2014 at 2:05 PM

Minute Maid. Wasn’t that the problem Faye Dunaway had in Network?

  12. tysonpunchinguterus - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:04 PM

They should stick with the ballpark’s long-name history and name it Globe Life Field at the Ballpark in Arlington. Or get even more specific and extend it to Globe Life Field at the Ballpark in Arlington Conveniently Located on Ballpark Way.

  13. philliesblow - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:07 PM

“It’s hotter than a microwave.” This will work so well in July.

  14. beefytrout - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:17 PM

Rangers fans call the stadium by one name and one name only: The Ballpark.

    • spudchukar - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:41 PM

      Oh, those mellifluous, eloquent Texans.

      • beefytrout - Feb 5, 2014 at 1:37 PM

Really? were the first two words of my post too difficult to understand?

      • spudchukar - Feb 5, 2014 at 1:43 PM

Nope, as I commented, those Texans have such a way with words. Still testy about 2011?

      • historiophiliac - Feb 5, 2014 at 1:52 PM

        You forgot “humorless.”

      • spudchukar - Feb 5, 2014 at 1:53 PM

Yes, yes I did. Thanks for the addition.

      • stex52 - Feb 5, 2014 at 2:17 PM

Hold on, now. That depends on your Texan.

      • spudchukar - Feb 5, 2014 at 2:22 PM

Granted, my comment was grossly unfair to Spanish speakers.

      • stex52 - Feb 5, 2014 at 2:43 PM

        Gracias. Estoy agradecido.

      • spudchukar - Feb 5, 2014 at 2:54 PM

        Mi objectivo es complacer a.

  15. paperlions - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:20 PM

Globe Life Insurance Ballpark. Works from me, being GLIB is fun.

    • historiophiliac - Feb 5, 2014 at 1:53 PM

absolutely too close to GLBT for Rick Perry’s comfort

      • stex52 - Feb 5, 2014 at 2:19 PM

Rick Perry uncomfortable, eh? Wait a minute, what’s the downside?

      • historiophiliac - Feb 5, 2014 at 2:20 PM

        I don’t judge, stex. 😉

      • crackersnap - Feb 5, 2014 at 5:22 PM

        Globe Life Ballpark of Texas

      • paperlions - Feb 6, 2014 at 1:45 PM

Many St. Louis Blues fans (that is hockey), will type LGB to mean Let’s Go Blues)….I always add a T (Let’s Go Blues Team)

      • historiophiliac - Feb 6, 2014 at 2:31 PM

      • paperlions - Feb 6, 2014 at 3:20 PM

I feel like the “T” in LGBT often gets short shrift….I’m just righting a wrong.

      • historiophiliac - Feb 6, 2014 at 3:30 PM

        Yeah, sure. You’re just sensitive.

      • paperlions - Feb 6, 2014 at 4:23 PM

        That hurts.

      • historiophiliac - Feb 6, 2014 at 4:58 PM

        You like it.

  16. chacochicken - Feb 5, 2014 at 12:34 PM

    Gob Bluth Park at Arlington

    • historiophiliac - Feb 5, 2014 at 2:33 PM

      Gob Bluth Americuuuuuuhhhhh…

  17. Chipmaker - Feb 5, 2014 at 2:41 PM

This matters little. The Ballpark was officially monickered “Ameriquest Field” for a few seasons — I recall it was a mortgage company — and no one remembers that now. This too shall pass.
