The Braves interested in extensions for Andrelton Simmons, Julio Teheran

Feb 6, 2014, 11:02 AM EDT

They locked up Freddie Freeman for eight years and Jason Heyward for two. Now the Braves are looking at some of their other young guys:

Seems smart for a team that isn’t going to be a big free agent player and — if you believe them — will be able to spend more on salaries once they move into the new ballpark. It’s also interesting to note that all of these moves to lock up a young core come after they hired John Hart as a consultant a couple months back. Locking up the young guys like this was his m.o. in Cleveland in the 90s.

At any rate, deals for these young guys are a smart move. Basically, everyone except Craig Kimbrel is worth at least a look for this sort of thing. Not sure I’d go long with a closer given the track record, lest you wind up with a Jonathan Papelbon contract. But otherwise: go for it, guys.

Simmons is one of my favorite players to watch in all of MLB. His defense is really extraordinary, and the Braves should definitely lock him down.

As a Twins fan, Simmons is a joy to behold compared to Florimon, Escobar, and Bernier.

Glad they are doing this. Sign as many young players as you can. I think deals get done with most everyone except Kimbrel. I have a feeling that he will be traded after this year if they can’t reach a deal.

It’ll be a certainty if he wins his arbitration case, as he’ll be looking to make 12-14 million in 2015.

Yeah that is just way too much to pay a guy who is only pitching 60-70 innings a year. Hopefully the Braves start finding a backup option to Kimbrel after this year.

I wouldn’t cut Teheran any slack until they shut down their uranium enrichment program. Period.

Just when its become reliable and is primed for a breakout? Why would they do that?

Now that the deets on the Freeman deal are out, I have a bit more hope that all these long-term deals won’t be entirely stupid.

That’s assuming that Cobb County Corporate Stadium and Water Luge Park is the cash cow Liberty Media is hoping for. I have far fewer hopes of that coming through than they do. If that development tanks, the Braves will be in HUGE trouble with their payroll – they’ll have a roster filled with $80-100 million guys they can’t afford or get a good return on.

Kimbrel, 2 years, 20 million and whatever Simmons wants for 7 years……GO BRAVES
