Nolan Ryan to accept a job with the Houston Astros

Feb 11, 2014, 4:40 PM EST

Nolan Ryan cowboy

Mark Berman of FOX 26 Sports reports that Nolan Ryan will join the Houston Astros as an advisor to owner Jim Crane, general manager Jeff Luhnow, and his son Reid Ryan, president of business operations. The job is supposed to have both business operations and baseball operations roles.

Which is interesting, as Ryan stepping on baseball operations toes — or having others step on his toes, depending on who you listen to — was one of the reasons he left the Rangers. I’m guessing, though, that Ryan will get along with his son pretty well, OK. At least one would hope.

I’m going to set odds at 8 out of 10 times that you do not want to work with family.

Don’t be such a silly fu**! Everyone knows it’s no more than 4 out of 5 times that you do not want to work with family…

Forget family. Hopefully Ryan has enough credibility to tell Luhnow ‘Jeff, enough with the Tyler Greenes. He couldn’t beat out Pete Kozma.”

How long before Nolan is announced as the ‘Stro’s opening day starter?

That is such a ridiculous comment.

The guy is 66 years old and the Houston Astros is a professional sports franchise.

It is really ludicrous that you would say something so ridiculously offensive.

They have him penciled in no higher than 3rd in the rotation.

“the Houston Astros is a professional sports franchise”

        Proof please.

You should see the photo after they put the quarter in.

Hasn’t this been reported every day for the last two months? We know. He’s going to the Astros.

Time for the Astros to apply for a Volume Discount in Pensacola at the Andrews Clinic.

Houston has a MLB team? Does Vida Blue still pitch for them?

I listened to the local news last night and he was pretty vague about what his actual responsibilities are. I think you are close if you can spell “figurehead.” But that is okay. He is popular in the local community and a lot of PR for a team that won’t be good for at least another year is not a bad thing.

Besides, as I keep hoping, maybe this locks the Round Rock AAA franchise into coming back to the Astros.

Seriously, can spring training get started already?
