Prince Fielder is in The Best Shape of His Life

Feb 12, 2014, 12:30 PM EDT

He’s on an MMA kick. Heavy training. And his interviewer, Toni Collins, asks him specifically if he’s in The Best Shape of His Life. And yep, he says yes.

Thank you, Toni. I owe you one.

don’t forget jarrod parker of the a’s for BSOHL

“… Jarrod Parker, the A’s likely Opening Day starter, says he added some weight, going from 195 pounds to over 200; he wants to stay strong into October. “I know everyone always says this, but I feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in,” Parker said.

… and the Tigers fans lasting image of Fielder is a fat POS flopping in the infield, before getting tagged out on a huge double play that opened the door for the Red Sox to beat them to get the World Series. Why wasn’t he in better shape in Detroit? I am not even a Tigers fan and I’m insulted by this.

    • Detroit Michael - Feb 12, 2014 at 1:02 PM

I’m not insulted by it, but that post-season belly flop may have been SO embarrassing that it’s motivated Fielder to be more in shape.

    • historiophiliac - Feb 12, 2014 at 1:27 PM

I was in no way “insulted” by it. He’s not the only guy out there who doesn’t slide well. He’s had other good slides (and Fielder bowling!), but you remember the last crappy one gone south because that’s what you’ve seen of him. FYI, he’s probably getting in shape because he’s back on the dating market (divorced people, amirite?). I always enjoyed watching him on the base path — mostly because it put the fear of Jesus in basemen he was running at. And, honestly, his forte is really crushing balls, which doesn’t require a lot of running. Same with Miggy. Moobs power! I will miss Prince immensely and will be very bitter if in the end Joba gets a ring with us when PF did not.

Interesting insight about dating again. I sometimes have nightmares about it. But most of us don’t have dozens and dozens of millions of dollars. That might make some people appreciate your “personality” more than your body-type.
Maybe I’m being cynical. Probably, dating when you’re loaded with money would be a nightmare as well. It would be hard to trust anybody.
However, I would bet the reason is pride. He wants to crush a lot of balls, all season long, to regain respect.

      • historiophiliac - Feb 12, 2014 at 1:50 PM

Hey, I date for personality instead of body-type and none of my boyfriends have been rich. But my ex started training for Ironmans after we split…yet another example of how I got the short stick. 😛

Reblogged this on Musings of a Displaced Tigers Fan and commented:
Go figure. I knew this would happen, and this is exactly why Fielder is going to hit 45+ homers this year.

      Go to h-e-double hockey sticks!

      • doctorofsmuganomics - Feb 12, 2014 at 1:34 PM

I just drove through there. Not a bad little Michigan town

      • historiophiliac - Feb 12, 2014 at 1:40 PM

You know I don’t live in Michigan, right? Why are you hating?

      • doctorofsmuganomics - Feb 12, 2014 at 1:49 PM

Because I do live in Michigan.

And I wasn’t hating that time, Hell Michigan exists. google it

      • historiophiliac - Feb 12, 2014 at 2:14 PM

I’m totally not going to say anything about which side of the state it’s on…because I value our Friendship (Oklahoma).

  7. philliesblow - Feb 12, 2014 at 1:35 PM

If Fielder hits 45+ homers this year it will more likely be due to playing 81 home games in the warm air and small confines of The Globe in Arlington instead of Comerica National Park.

I thought his wife was at his press conference in Texas after the trade. Maybe he decided it was better to get lighter in the belly than lighter in the wallet.

You can add Sandavol at 3B for BSOHL Lineup

  9. spursareold - Feb 12, 2014 at 4:03 PM

I was going to be mad about this, but in reality, the Tigers were going to dump him, whatever shape he was in, to keep Max. I’d rather have a second ace than a fat, or not quite so fat, first baseman.

  10. 6stn - Feb 12, 2014 at 9:40 PM

He’s in the best shape of his life. But it’s only February. What kind of shape will he be in come September?

  11. rcj22001 - Feb 12, 2014 at 9:43 PM

As an avid Tigers fan I’d like to say a few things to Mr Fielder, however my post will get deleted. He gave 110% on the field, but athletes have to work off of the field as well to do more with their talent. Glad to see that $200 million finally got him motivated, and worst of luck to you in Texas.

  12. mightyoak - Feb 12, 2014 at 9:57 PM

Gotta do something right to prove you’re worth it I guess. I would be happier for Joba getting a ring this year with Detroit than Prince getting one with Texas. Boy has been silver spooned and now he might be starting to get it. But I seriously doubt it though. Grab a shovel Rangers groundscrew, Prince got a new set of wheels. It’s just a game ya know?

  13. stevequinn - Mar 15, 2014 at 11:00 AM

I swear to God Calcaterra, you have “in the best shape of his life” stored in a function key because it’s about the 50th time I’ve seen you use it on one player or another. I hate typing also so I understand, guy.
