Chad Gaudin failed physical exam, released by Phillies

Chad Gaudin signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies three weeks ago, but he failed the physical exam and was released today.

Gaudin would have earned $750,000 if he made the Opening Day roster out of spring training after throwing 97 innings with a 3.06 ERA for the Giants at age 30. However, he missed time with carpal tunnel syndrome that required surgery, which is presumably the cause of the failed physical now.

At the time of the signing Gaudin was linked to a handful of teams, so it’s possible he’ll be able to land a similar contract elsewhere.

Anyone else wondering if maybe teams are changing their minds after signing guys and failing them on their physicals to get out of the deals? Seems like an awful lot of guys are failing then signing elsewhere.

Yeah, this really sucks. Almost every pitcher has some shoulder damage by the time they reach Gaudin’s age. It is just too convenient. Gaudin now has to seek work elsewhere, has lost some leverage, and many roster spots are filled. Look for the player’s union to put a stop to this.
