A fitting tribute to Alex Rodriguez in Tampa

Feb 14, 2014, 10:18 AM EDT

I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

Sort of like what they did for Thurman Munson.

Thoughts. Prayers.

Maybe they are not ruling out a last-minute spring training appearance?

    • mmeyer3387 - Feb 14, 2014 at 7:09 PM

I’ve never been a big A-Rod or Yankee fan. Yet, I’m a baseball fan that enjoys watching and following the game. I truly enjoy the game, which includes all teams and players. Maybe some more than others. I don’t hate or begrudge other teams or players. Yet, I keep hearing from people that seem to enjoy insulting and condemning the people who play. Can’t we just move on and enjoy the greatness and pleasures of the game of baseball and put aside the negativism? .

      • apkyletexas - Feb 15, 2014 at 12:13 AM

The Yankees and Red Sox are massively cheating organizations who have both won multiple World Series in the past 20 years primarily due to their organized cheating, PED’ing, and their enormous manipulation of player salaries to ensure that the best young players will nearly always leave their small market teams.

The fact that the media nearly always focuses on one or two names like A-Rod or Man-Ram simply helps conceal the fact that these two death star organizations have demolished professional baseball for generations of small market fans.

I’ll enjoy the “greatness and pleasures of the game”, but as a Pirates fan, I can tell you that the “negativism” is encoded into Pittsburgh’s baseball-rooting DNA by now. You can’t really separate the one from the other.

    • evanpenn - Feb 15, 2014 at 5:13 AM

I envision Jeter’s last game at Yankee Stadium. They will have a ceremony and hand the microphone to Jeter for him to speak to his fans for the last time and say goodbye. Arod will run on the field and grab the mic from Jeter’s hand, Kanye West style. He may say that he deserves it, not Jeter. Or he may just break into song. Or he may say that he considers himself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. Hard to predict exactly, but ohh will it be memorable.

    Concerns about second-hand PEDs?

    • chacochicken - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:34 AM

      Contact high, no doubt.

  4. jfk69 - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:44 AM

I sense a calm and peace settling in over the Yankees this summer. Perhaps the Mets can now get some back page news on slow days.
    Dear Alex
    RIP
i will have your locker cleaned methodically. Please let me know what I should do with your supplements?

  5. historiophiliac - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:50 AM

OMG, I get it. Unrequited love. Do I have to hear about it? I hate Valentine’s Day.

    • chill1184 - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:53 AM

Brace yourself since we’re going to hear about either A-Rod and Jeter the whole season.

      • historiophiliac - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:10 AM

A gift basket valued at $2,000 could make me feel differently about that.

      • mmeyer3387 - Feb 14, 2014 at 7:28 PM

The great game of baseball should be bigger than just NYC sports reporters writing hate and negative gossip or man crushing their favorite players. Really, there is other teams in this country to cover.

        what the hell is that?

      • historiophiliac - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:34 AM

        Oh. Thank you. :)

        yw ;)

      • dan1111 - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:13 AM

It’s either a rose or a mustachioed punk eating the letter A.

      • mrsteed10 - Feb 16, 2014 at 7:52 AM

Lord I thought it was turtle sticking out it’s tongue.

  6. Brian Donohue - Feb 14, 2014 at 10:56 AM

I think a Papal service at YS is called for. But ooh, that new Pope, he’s against capitalism, oh noes!

    • dcarroll73 - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:10 PM

Hey, if the Yanks agreed to a 7-figure donation to relieve poverty in NYC, I think this Pope would be on that. I like this guy; he is to fighting poverty what Batman is to fighting crime.

  7. DelawarePhilliesFan - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:04 AM

Craig, is there a legal angle at play here? Granted, A-Rod has said he will not attend, but out of an abundance of caution, could the Yankees perhaps be doing due diligence to show that they were prepared to allow him to come to spring training – something he is entitled to do? Maybe prevent a grievance down the road when the sides are haggling out the $61 million dollar walking papers?

    • sportsfan18 - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:41 AM

no one is entitled to a certain locker…

they could give him one of the bathroom stalls as a locker…

      • evanpenn - Feb 15, 2014 at 4:14 AM

Yes, then he could shoot up more easily.

  8. happytwinsfan - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:14 AM

can we get a picture of arod for these threads where it doesn’t look like he’s thinking of killing the person he’s looking at?

    • tfbuckfutter - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:20 AM

There are only three types of A-Rod pictures….the one you described, the one where he is doing something embarrassingly bush league on the field, or out and about with a mannish lady on his arm.

There used to be 4, but I think we all agreed to block out his trips to Glamour Shots.

      • historiophiliac - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:41 AM

You notice none of his teammates tweeted pics of his empty locker along with notes about being brothers forever and missing him.

      • tfbuckfutter - Feb 14, 2014 at 5:10 PM

That pic is making C.C. Sabathia really uncomfortable.

  9. bostonboresme - Feb 14, 2014 at 11:19 AM

Yanks should eat a chunk of his contract in ’15 and ship him to the Mets. They’re desperate enough.

    • gothapotamus90210 - Feb 14, 2014 at 12:03 PM

He has 10-5 rights … he has said he wouldn’t approve a trade previously.

      • happytwinsfan - Feb 14, 2014 at 1:44 PM

he might if he decides he wants to defiantly join the 700 home club and the yanks didn’t want to play him.

  10. billybawl - Feb 14, 2014 at 12:08 PM

The flip side is that if they had assigned his locker to someone, a reporter would have spun it into “___________ has big shoes to fill” or “can ______ break the curse of A-Rod.” Sometimes an empty locker is just an empty locker.

    • historiophiliac - Feb 14, 2014 at 12:14 PM

Or that it was a sign that they didn’t want him to come back. The media would spin it some way.

  11. markdartj - Feb 14, 2014 at 12:16 PM

Now I’ve seen it all. They’ve managed to tie the New York Yankees and Sarah McLachlan in the same article. A sign of the world’s demise.

  12. yordo - Feb 14, 2014 at 2:30 PM

As far as I know, he still hasn’t admitted anything. Is he preparing a glorious speech for 2015?

  13. nbjays - Feb 14, 2014 at 3:27 PM

Kind of shocked that Craig would use Sarah McLachlan lyrics… could have sworn he’d go with something by his favourite Canadian band… Rush.

Who knew he was a Lilith Fair fan?
    :-)

    • historiophiliac - Feb 14, 2014 at 4:31 PM

      Who knew you were?

    • nbjays - Feb 14, 2014 at 7:47 PM

Hey, Sarah’s my Canuck homie… we went to different schools together.

      • evanpenn - Feb 15, 2014 at 4:10 AM

And how do you go to different schools…together?

  14. ctony1216 - Feb 14, 2014 at 4:10 PM

Note to media: Baseball’s off-season just ended. Pitchers and catchers reported today. Let us have a new season without talking about A-Rod, please.

  15. tonyz6060chevy - Feb 14, 2014 at 5:24 PM

They should make A-Rod play the rest of his career in the Mexican leagues.Maybe play for los Tomateros ,or los Yaquis! I hear their bus rides are a real kick in the pants, down there !

  16. girardisbraces - Feb 14, 2014 at 8:11 PM

I just threw up in my mouth.

The fact that you mentioned A-Rod and Munson in the same breath leaves me disgusted. Shame on you.

(even in sarcasm, that’s just plain wrong.)

  17. 27xwschamps - Feb 15, 2014 at 3:53 AM

Thurmon Munson was a Yankee thru & thru.. And the last captain till # 2. A fraud disgusts me !!!!

  18. evanpenn - Feb 15, 2014 at 4:08 AM

I hadn’t realized Calcaterra was such a big Sarah Mclachlan fan, haha.

  19. evanpenn - Feb 15, 2014 at 4:25 AM

You can get a 2nd hand steroid fix if you go within 10 feet of Arod’s old locker. Its like Chernobyl, it will take decades before its safe to go near.

  20. evanpenn - Feb 15, 2014 at 5:01 AM

    There are places I’ll remember
All my life, though some have changed
    Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I’ll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I’ll often stop and think about them
In my life, I’ll love you more

Ok, maybe I went overboard but Calcaterra set the tone…
