Jonathan Papelbon is more optimistic than Ruben Amaro

Feb 17, 2014, 2:25 PM EDT

Ruben Amaro likes the Phillies’ chances. Jonathan Papelbon would, theoretically anyway, put his money where his mouth is:

It’s the picture that makes it. That’s a man who’s sure of himself.

In other news, I wanna take Jonathan Papelbon to Las Vegas with me.

When you’re making $13M you can afford to throw around money on bad bets.

Actually you guys don’t know anything about him. The guy is a gamer and a huge veteran presence for the younger guys. And I love how all you people sit here and crap on your own players. What do you expect him too say we suck the guy is a straight gamer and plays with pride and passion I can’t wait for the season too start and I would bet anybody on here that the phillies are going to be at least a 500 team this season.

There’s a great big difference between “if I was a gambling man I would take us to go all the way” and “.. I would bet anybody on here that the phillies are going to be at least a 500 team this season.”

Gamer?? More like Papelbon is a blowhard from the day he showed up.

Considering all the “complimentary” things Papelbon has had to say about the Phillies organization over the past several months. I’m tempted to believe these latest words of wisdom from him are meant to be somewhat sarcastic.

Memo to the Phillies. Papelbon is a loudmouth, jerk. Oh you already knew that? Well, if you can find another team to take this clown off your hands, do it! His best days are well behind him.

  4. RickyB - Feb 17, 2014 at 3:08 PM

Why would you want to take him to Vegas. He’s obviously not a gambler by saying, “If I was a gambler …” Wouldn’t do you much good to have him along unless you wanted to end up naked in someone’s trunk.

Jonathan Papelbon is a wise man. He gets a bad wrap from the media that cannot understand him like I can. He’s a winner and will pitch balls-to-the-wall this year for the Phillies!

    • paperlions - Feb 17, 2014 at 3:32 PM

For the Phillies sake, I hope he pitches balls-to-the-mitt this year. Wild pitches won’t help.

      • halladaysbiceps - Feb 17, 2014 at 3:46 PM

        LOL! Good one!

      • jcmeyer10 - Feb 17, 2014 at 4:29 PM

Or balls hit to the wall. Either way, you’re right.

If you showed me a bunch of Papelbon quotes, and I had no idea who he was, and wanted me to guess which sport he plays I would immediately guess football.

My followup would be “any other sport that involves getting hit in the head a lot.”

  7. butchhuskey - Feb 17, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Isn’t this the same guy who spent all last year whining that the Phillies had no leadership instead of, I don’t know, stepping up and becoming a leader?

Also, I think this is the world’s first “picnic table press conference.”

  8. DelawarePhilliesFan - Feb 17, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Fay Vincent would give Papelbohn a lifetime ban for that quote. I would support the move

  9. courtjester1234 - Feb 17, 2014 at 4:31 PM

Before he signed here in Philly,I had a buddy who had relocated from Boston to here. He told me that the phillies were going to wish this guy never signed here. I took his word as gold, since he was a Sox fan. To top it off this toolbag runs his mouth about the team and proceeds to cough up wins when he is handed a 2 run lead. This guy needs to get his head out of his buttocks and start earning those millions he’s been stealing from Monty and friends

    • pisano - Feb 17, 2014 at 5:22 PM

@courtjester1234… well put, but let me add, this guy has been a total dick his entire career. He slammed everything and everyone in Boston, and he’s doing the same in Philadelphia. He should learn to take his foot out of his mouth, and stick it in his ass.

he said something super optimistic about his team’s chances.that’s what members of a team do..

  11. jrclark1978 - Feb 17, 2014 at 6:44 PM

Phillies will go all the way? They’ll go from the regular season straight to the golf course – guaranteed. Put your money on that Paps.

Of course Papelbon has a positive disposition. He’s a winner and amaro is a career loser in everything g he’s done in baseball. He’s a rich fraudulent no talent who has raised his middle finger defiantly to the stars and World Series heroes of the greatest generation of phillies ever. He had absolutely nothing to contribute to this team and has only ruined it w one pathetically embarrassing move (mistake) after another. Hi victorino and pence for starters. Ruben amaro is more depicted on website than any phillies player and by FAR more than all other Gm’s in MLB. Papelbon and the rest of the vet superstars need to return rube’s insulting challenge to the real face of the team…the star players. Greatest 2B, SS & 1B in team history and worst GM other than Omar minaya in sports history. The Cleveland browns surely laugh at rubie’s mess. The fans have to suffer so he can get fired…at long last. What an injustice. Sad and depressing. Took us from the glory years to trash in a couple years all due to incompetence. Please save us paps and the boys. Please.

And another point for the papelbon haters. The bad chemistry in the clubhouse is cuz of the GM. The 5 time div champs did it together. U don’t think it pisses stars n winners off in the room when the imbecilic GM dumps victorino, werth, etc and over pays for inferior new dudes who fail and kill the organizations progress. If u were a phillies legend like j-roll, Howard and utley and a horrible GM trades ur culture, heart and soul away and replaces it w his usual misguided replacements, u would lose faith and be demoralized too. Rube the brain cell is the prob. Not papelbon. Just ask em when u run into em in Clearwater. The players – the talent – need to rise and save the team and the fans.
