The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs’ alternate cap has bacon on it

Feb 24, 2014, 2:00 PM EDT

Sometimes the headlines just sort of explain it all, ya know?

I feel like we, as the Internet, reached peak bacon a year ago or so. But I do think someone in your life will like this cap.

I have nothing against bacon…mmmmmmm, bacon…but that just may be the ugliest ball cap I have ever seen.

    • NatsLady - Feb 24, 2014 at 3:02 PM

How does this one compare in ugliness?

        Yeah, that’s pretty hideous too.

The Trout hats are fabulous, don’t hate!

43% of men prefer bacon to sex

    • bigharold - Feb 24, 2014 at 2:13 PM

No, you’ve got that wrong. 43% of men prefer bacon WITH sex.

      Bacon makes everything better!

      • angrytwitterguy - Feb 24, 2014 at 2:14 PM

        Sorry that would be 100%

        It wasn’t a joke, lol

        Only the results

      • Joe - Feb 24, 2014 at 3:33 PM

That’s better than sex with bacon. I think.

    • historiophiliac - Feb 24, 2014 at 5:45 PM

That’s exactly why ladies use their quarter jars to save for shoes.

    2 thoughts:
    1) bacon cannot peak!
    2) might be more appropriate for the major league club – being cooked and all.

I’m not thrilled with the decisions the Philly minor league teams have made recently. I understand the need to sell merchandise and get people interested, but the Reading Phillies was a great franchise with a classic theme (the train was great) and now they’re the “Reading Fightin’ Phils”, with theming based around a ridiculous hot dog vendor who rides an ostrich. The Iron Pigs is a clever name, and they have a great logo (the raging metal pig). The bacon thing doesn’t seem necessary or appropriate. I have no problem with trying to sell more merchandise, but I’d rather they do it in a way that’s consistent with the strength of their brands, rather than what they’re doing. But maybe I’m just a curmudgeon when it comes to minor league baseball.

Have you been to any of the games? This is a kid thing, and they only wear that version for Saturday home games, it seems.

They race all sorts of pig meat basically after one of the innings (I forget which), with a ham, bacon, hot dog and man I forget what else. The kids get a kick out of it, it’s not a bad play on the mascot.

Of course, PETA has to be pissed by this development, lol.

      • The Dangerous Mabry - Feb 24, 2014 at 2:44 PM

Yes, I’ve been to a few games, though I’ll admit I don’t recall the food races. I don’t pay as much attention to the between innings stuff as I know the younger folks do, though.

I should say that this is way better than the Fightin’ Phils thing in my mind, because at least it makes SOME sense, but bacon seems like an odd choice for a kid thing. It feels more like a “let’s see if we can sell some hats on the internet” thing.

        I could be wrong.

      • CJ - Feb 24, 2014 at 3:47 PM

Oh it’s most definitely both. Give the marketing guys props on this one. As blantant as that is, it’s punny, and it’s bacon, so it’ll sell well.

    • Joe - Feb 24, 2014 at 3:37 PM

Plus the road jerseys for Reading read “Baseballtown” (that is if you can read the tiny script across the chest), which seems pretty cocky to me. The ostrich thing is simply bizarre.

  5. CJ - Feb 24, 2014 at 2:32 PM

Just when I was running out of reasons to like anything about the Phils any more, this totally happened. Just fire RAJ sooner rather than later, and all will be forgiven.

I wish I had this for Bacon Week in AC

  7. sabatimus - Feb 24, 2014 at 3:38 PM

Come on Craig, we all know there’s absolutely no critical mass when it comes to BACON.

  8. southpaw2k - Feb 24, 2014 at 3:40 PM

I’m guessing the other alternate caps feature a hot dog, sausage, and pork chops.

  9. faccda01 - Feb 24, 2014 at 3:43 PM

Craig had to find some way to bash the Phillies, even with something as awesome as this.

  10. Minoring In Baseball - Feb 24, 2014 at 6:57 PM

Yes, the hat is awesome. But it’s not really front page news. Very cool hat, though.

Couldn’t be more proud of my hometown.

i couldn’t care less; bacon is overrated and the phillies’ farm system is deplorable.
