Post-porno flap, the Cardinals tell their players to use social media The Right Way

Feb 25, 2014, 11:33 AM EDT

Social Media

Posting porno on a Twitter feed is something a low-class organization’s players will do. It’s not The Cardinal Way:

A day after Deadspin, a sports website that posts commentary on various sports issues and athletes, posted a list of pornographic images that showed up on the Twitter feed of Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez, manager Mike Matheny addressed players in a morning meeting about the need to be vigilant about their use of social media.

Oops. Here’s the Deadspin post.

If I was talking to athletes about social media I’d simply tell them: it’s a microphone. Assume every social media platform you use, be it Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, a blogging platform, MySpace, Friendster or some weird forum on the last outpost of Commodore64’s HomeLink network is the same thing as a microphone being held by a reporter from the local paper. Say nothing into it that you wouldn’t say to the reporter and you’ll never go wrong.

(Thanks to NatsLady for the heads up)

I have a feeling that most organizations would do something like this if Deadspin found it. And you can guess 29 other teams are looking through their players’ Twitter favorites to see if they’re next.

    • Old Gator - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:45 AM

I do hope the Mariners will resolutely patrol Twitter to see if Tweeter is evangelizing his mastrophobia again. Anyone who would make a public issue of his horror of the teat in tropical Macondo might feel doubly empowered to pule about it where it’s cold and wet.

      • bfunk1978 - Feb 25, 2014 at 4:14 PM

        cold and wet…like a dog’s nose?

  2. Old Gator - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:39 AM

Don’t criticize the social media. Before it, the dimwitted and illiterate had no voice and it took talented demagogues to marshal them into an influential force. Now, they just need a keyboard. That’s progress.

    • historiophiliac - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:44 PM

And we are ever so entertained. Laugh at the clowns.

    • vivabear - Feb 25, 2014 at 6:47 PM

      Yourself?

  3. El Bravo - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:40 AM

Does this mean NatsLady likes the same porno that Carlos Martinez likes? That’s what I glean from this post.

    • NatsLady - Feb 25, 2014 at 1:28 PM

Ha! It means I’m on Twitter too much. Way too much.

      • historiophiliac - Feb 25, 2014 at 2:36 PM

No one’s judging you for your “Twitter time.” wink, wink

  4. craigssideburns - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:41 AM

Gotta keep that pitching arm strong in the offseason somehow.

    • bh192012 - Feb 25, 2014 at 2:43 PM

So Kate Upton is the reason Verlander’s velocity has gone down?

      • craigssideburns - Feb 25, 2014 at 3:30 PM

        Women weaken legs

  5. thedoubleentandres - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:41 AM

Rookie mistake Martinez, everyone knows you create another account for the naughty tweets.
Noone will ever know I’m really @FappyGilmore

    • thedoubleentandres - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:54 AM

lol made that name up, then searched and of course it exists

      • Francisco (FC) - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:57 AM

        Yeah yeah, likely story.

      • thedoubleentandres - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:19 PM

        Haha knew that was coming

Some poor fellow is going to be inundated with jeering baseball fans next time he’s on for a cheeky session

    • phantomspaceman - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:02 PM

      @AroldisFapman ?

      • kevinbnyc - Feb 25, 2014 at 1:28 PM

@FapAnson is more old school, if you’re into that kind of thing.

        @MattFapps

  6. themanytoolsofignorance - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:49 AM

Well now. I’m getting in trouble a lot today. That was a big old wall of porn right there. The wife was not amused. I’m presuming that Carlos Martinez doesn’t have a wife. I doubt she’d be amused either.

man. the things I learn when I’m home sick from work

    • gloccamorra - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:15 PM

He may have a brother/cousin who works his twitter account for him. It could be like the grandma who got busted for downloading heavy metal, after she let her grandson use her computer.

  7. chacochicken - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:51 AM

Mr. Martinez treats objects like women, man.

  8. rbj1 - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:03 PM

Wait, there’s porn on the internet?

    • gloccamorra - Feb 25, 2014 at 11:17 PM

Sadly, yes – but it’s hard to find. You have to know which twitter accounts have it.

  9. bostonboresme - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:10 PM

    Deadspin’s good stuff.

  10. zzalapski - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:17 PM

  11. okwhitefalcon - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:18 PM

Actually, Deadspin poached this from St Louisan Matt Sebek (without giving credit) – keeper of JoeSportsFan.com.

Sebek’s twitter feed post porn is hilarious – https://twitter.com/MattSebek

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:44 PM

No they didn’t, they gave credit to who alerted them at the bottom of their post.

    • historiophiliac - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:46 PM

If you’re going to give the link, you might oughta advise if it’s safe for work.

    • bfunk1978 - Feb 25, 2014 at 4:18 PM

You know, I thought I’d heard about this somewhere before, like it wasn’t really news. Did Sebek really point this out a while back?

      • bfunk1978 - Feb 25, 2014 at 4:19 PM

That was a couple hours before Deadspin, so yeah, he kind of pointed it out, but I’m talking about months ago. I thought this came up a while back.

  12. jwbiii - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:24 PM

Eh, by the time I hear about this sort of thing, the fun stuff is all gone. The lead post is a retweet of a photo very much like we saw of the Tigers recently with a group of A’s players holding a Venezuelan flag and a Venezuela We Are With You sign.

  13. moogro - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:36 PM

That reminds me of when Aasif Mandvi said, “You know that we can hear you, right?”

  14. jimmyt - Feb 25, 2014 at 12:56 PM

Kids got good taste. Some real nice looking young ladies on that wall.

  15. sawxalicious - Feb 25, 2014 at 1:31 PM

One of three things occurred here….
1)Martinez is REALLY dumb for posting those images to a public forum
    2)Someone hacked his Twitter Account
3)Someone made up a fake Twitter account for him.

I suspect in the very near future we’ll figure out which one it was. I am withholding judgment until that time.

  16. tfbuckfutter - Feb 25, 2014 at 3:37 PM

You know who I feel bad for?

The groundskeeper who puts the cross on the mound.

I imagine him blubbering like Chris Parnell in Anchorman after Ron Burgundy drops the f-word.

    • bfunk1978 - Feb 25, 2014 at 4:36 PM

I thought they quit doing that after AnswerDave spent the better part of three days being offended at its existence.

      • tfbuckfutter - Feb 25, 2014 at 5:10 PM

        Well see? There ya go.

They got rid of the cross and that’s when Carlos started looking at the devil’s television programming.

        BRING BACK JESUS!

  17. musketmaniac - Feb 25, 2014 at 4:50 PM

porn, just porn. not kiddie porn, no circus midgets, nocturnal animals, dog pedophilia, or modern circus bestiality. Just porn. Good old fashion American as Apple pie porn. what’s the problem. does anyone have a feed or a stream.

  18. mpzz - Feb 25, 2014 at 5:57 PM

You’re never going to stop it til you ban the twidiots from having an account at all. People on “social media” just can’t stop themselves from vomiting out their ignorance for the whole world to see.

  19. Carl Hancock - Feb 25, 2014 at 6:35 PM

It’s pretty obvious some people, including Craig, don’t know how Twitter works. Carlos wasn’t tweeting or retweeting porn. He was starring other people’s tweets. He obviously didn’t know that when you star a tweet it can be visible if you view a users “Favorites”. It’s Twitters version of bookmarks only they are public. It was a case of ignorance. Obviously if he knew it was publicly visible he wouldn’t have done so. He likely uses Twitter via a mobile app in which case a users Favorites are buried more than they are when you view their profile in a desktop or laptop browser. I saw it yesterday afternoon and thought it was pretty hilarious. Even funnier when I noticed they were in the process of us starring tweets and scrambling to clean it up. The whole “Cardinal Way” jabs are stale Craig. You need a new schtick. Being a Reds fan you just come across as jealous and desperate every time you mention it.
