Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal cut short a live batting practice session on Tuesday in camp after experiencing discomfort in his upper right leg.

Now the diagnosis is in from Jupiter, Florida.

According to MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch, the hard-throwing right-hander suffered a right groin strain and will likely take it easy for the rest of this week.

“Our approach right now is going to be day to day,” Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told Langosch on Tuesday. “I do feel like this is caught early enough that it probably avoided anything more serious.”

Rosenthal owns a dominant 2.66 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 133/27 K/BB ratio through his first 98 innings at the major league level. The 23-year-old has also delivered 20 1/3 scoreless postseason frames.

Relievers don’t usually need that much work in spring, so he should be fine for Opening Day.

That’s bad news. Those groin injuries linger longer than anticipated, like a month, and it takes awhile to get back to normal even after the pain is gone, often another month.

Sorry Doctor, but your diagnosis is pure B.S. Yesterday, I surmised it was probably a groin pull, when upper thigh was reported. The lower the groin pull the less severe (usually), look for Rosenthal to take it easy for about 10 days, go slow but be healed by mid-March at the latest.

Rest of the week, my foot. Shut that man down for as long as possible and then a couple of days more.

And today, kids, our lesson is entitled “Why you can never have too much starting pitching.”

This one goes with the Garcia post. Rosenthal and Motte posts reflect the fact that you can never have too much relief pitching. In other words, STOCKPILE THOSE PITCHERS.

Groin pull, huh? Damn you Carlos Martinez!

I’m shocked, Paper. Shocked I didn’t think of it first.
