Masahiro Tanaka to make his spring debut on Saturday and HBT will be there

Masahiro Tanaka AP

I leave for spring training in Florida tomorrow. Masahiro Tanaka makes his spring training debut on Saturday. Oh, providence!

Tanaka will throw 35 pitches for the Yankees that day. He won’t start — that’ll be CC Sabathia — but he will start an inning, either after Sabathia or third after Hiroki Kuroda goes.

I was at Yu Darvish‘s spring training debut in Arizona a couple of years ago. The pitching itself was kind of boring — he had good stuff but also gave up a lot of sharp hits — but it was a wild scene overall. The media throngs, the pumped-up fans and the general excitement of the debut of a much-awaited and little-seen pitcher. I figure that the Tanaka experience will be like that multiplied by about a hundred. Everything is bigger in New York. Even when New York is in Tampa for a couple of months.

I’ll be posting live from Tanaka-palooza on Saturday. Be here/there or be square.

Who do the Yankees play on Saturday?

    • Jeremy T - Feb 26, 2014 at 11:49 AM

They’ll be playing against the Phillies. The game will air on both the YES Network and MLB Network.

“I leave for spring training in Florida tomorrow.”

Ah, so tomorrow’s the day the site transitions to a slideshow of equipment bags sitting next to foul lines for 3 weeks. One of my favorite times of year.

Tis a glorious time indeed. This year, I get to do the same (for a day). AZ in two weeks! WOOOOOO! Sorry to rub it in. It’s just that I’m in Chicago and I’m severely depressed due to extended deep freezes and snow storms.

He knew they were facing the phillies. He’s just such a hater that he didn’t put it in there.

How can people stomach these games?

And Circus Boy dances like a monkey on barbed wire
And the barker romances with a junkie, she’s got a flat tire
And now the elephants dance real funky and the band plays like a jungle fire
Circus town’s on the live wire

You get to see the Yankees’ top 3 in one day. Money’s worth by the 6th or 7th

Too bad there won’t be any reporters there to see it.

If Masahiro Tanaka started, and then was followed by C.C., then Hiroki Kuroda … C.C. would be pitching in a Hiro sandwich.

In any case, it’s a nice lineup of pitchers to go see.
