Brad Penny‘s comeback attempt didn’t last very long, as the Royals just released the 35-year-old right-hander.

Penny didn’t pitch in the majors at all last season and hasn’t been effective since 2010, when he made nine good starts before getting hurt. Since then he has a 5.41 ERA in 210 innings and Penny got knocked around in a couple outings this spring.

He was in Royals camp on a minor-league contract.

UPDATE: Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports that Penny injured his non-throwing hand by punching a wall Thursday, which may have hastened his release from the Royals.

Wasn’t his nine starts with the Cardinals that year?

Always remember, son: a Penny released is a Penny spurned…or something.

There is not a dimes worth a difference between him and the replacement. There is a risk of being penny wise and pound foolish with the move. However, this change makes sense.

This is something like the end of the steroids era … not with a bang but a wimper

My guess is that he will show up someplace, because as we all know “a b(r)ad penny keeps turning up”…

Crash Davis: Did you hit the wall with your right hand or did you hit it with your left?
    Brad Penny: Huh?
Crash Davis: Did you hit the wall with your right hand or did you hit it with your LEFT?
    Brad Penny: My left.
Crash Davis: Good! That’s good; when you get in a fight with a wall you don’t hit it with your pitching hand. God, I can’t keep giving you these free lessons so quit screwin’ around and patch that hole.
