UPDATE: While recent reports have indicated that Ervin Santana is looking to find a team as soon as possible, FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi reports that the free agent right-hander has not set a deadline and is prepared to wait “days” before signing with a club. The wait continues.

1:15 p.m. ET: More intrigue. Enrique Rojas of ESPN.com reports (story in Spanish) that Santana is deciding between a one-year, $14 million deal with the Blue Jays and a one-year, $13 million deal (plus incentives) with the Orioles.

12:30 p.m. ET: It’s apparently not a deal done yet. Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes hears that Santana will sign with the Blue Jays if he doesn’t receive a better offer by 5 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi reports that the Blue Jays and Santana are working toward a deal, but an agreement is not in place.

12:22 p.m. ET: The mystery team has been identified. According to Dionisio Soldevila of ESPN Deportes, the Blue Jays and free agent right-hander Ervin Santana have agreed to terms on a one-year, $14 million contract.

Soldevila reported this morning that Santana was set to sign a one-year, $14 million deal with an American League team. The Blue Jays and Orioles were considered the most logical fits, but Toronto was apparently able to get the deal done.

Santana was reportedly hoping to land a $100 million contract this winter after posting a 3.24 ERA and 161/51 K/BB ratio over 211 innings last season with the Royals, but draft pick compensation and worries over his elbow greatly diminished his market. However, it looks like he’ll still get a deal close to the one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer he turned down from the Royals.

Assuming the deal gets done, Santana would join a rotation which projects to include R.A. Dickey, Brandon Morrow, Mark Buehrle, and J.A. Happ. The Blue Jays have two protected first-round picks this year (one is for finishing with one of the 10 worst records last season and the other is for failing to sign their first-round pick last year), so they would only have to surrender their second-round pick in order to sign him.

Ohhhh Thank you GOD!!! YES!!! I am going to church tomorrow baby!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

    • happytwinsfan - Mar 8, 2014 at 3:06 PM

not so fast harry. i gave the jays santana because i figured they need the depth and because i owe them for this winter. now i gotta figure out what to give the twins.

      God

  2. dirtyharry1971 - Mar 8, 2014 at 12:40 PM

I love how one of their draft picks is protected because they sucked soo badly last year, lol oh that is sooo funny. I can NOT wait to see this NL rotation get slammed, this is gonna be a great season

  3. proudlycanadian - Mar 8, 2014 at 12:45 PM

I am in shock. I do not like this move. On a more positive note, Happ is very unlikely to make the Jay’s rotation.

    • dirtyharry1971 - Mar 8, 2014 at 12:48 PM

Thank You AA!! I didn’t think it could get any better after last years offseason but I was wrong! LOVE THIS MOVE YES!!!

    • happytwinsfan - Mar 8, 2014 at 2:33 PM

why so negative? i suppose giving up even just a second round pick for a one year rental is questionable. still, career wise he’s a solid 200 inning league average who’s coming off one of the two best years of his career. this being his tenth year his decline might start, but if so you’re rid of him in 2015.

cheer yourself up by checking these twins starting rotation projections

  4. dirtyharry1971 - Mar 8, 2014 at 12:46 PM

I think im gonna go out and have a couple of drinks to Celebrate this signing!! Man I wish the season was starting tomorrow after hearing this wonderful news!! YESSSSS Thank you AA, Thank you Toronto front office! The only thing that would have made this better is if they signed him to a 6 year deal!! Love it, love it love it love it!!! Im pumped today baby! Its gonna be a great day!

  5. paint771 - Mar 8, 2014 at 12:47 PM

I think the rotation he joins is Drew Hutchinson instead of Happ, but yeah.

Good basically no risk signing – AA read the market perfectly on this one and gets a mid rotation starter without a long term commitment. Kind of a no brainer.

Sucks for Santana – free agency ain’t what it used to be.

    • dirtyharry1971 - Mar 8, 2014 at 12:49 PM

Yea Hutchinson can not even master the low minor leagues what makes anyone think he is gonna be good in the MLB? Will not happen, and yea AA read the market perfectly alright, just like he did last off season. Nice NL rotation they got going there!!

      • canadiansportsfan77 - Mar 8, 2014 at 3:17 PM

Well Drew actually tore up the minors all the way up his MLB debut. Was putting together a solid season until he hurt himself, and I’m assuming the only stats ur using in your peabrain logic is his rehab starts from last yr but I am also assuming your neglecting his fall league stats.

Nice try there big guy, you worry about your overpaid ace and overpaid prize acquisition and we’ll worry about our rotation.

      • dirtyharry1971 - Mar 8, 2014 at 6:36 PM

Well we obviously have different opinions on what “tearing it up” means. Check out these stats from last year….at triple A Buffalo he had a 6.63 ERA over 20 innings\5 starts….At double A last year he had a 4.70 ERA over 2 starts…..He threw 35 innings last year, not sure what he did with all his free time when he actually pitched he got ripped everywhere except single a. The year before that he threw a whopping 16 innings so that’s 51 innings over 2 years. Even if they bring him up whats he gonna be good for? 25 innings? In reality this guy needs to build up some innings but the jays are so desperate for starters they will throw anyone into the fire right now so yea you got LOTS to worry about son cause that NL rotation is gonna get murdered

  6. dirtyharry1971 - Mar 8, 2014 at 12:52 PM

Gibbons should put his house up for sale right now and AA should put his up too, this team is going NOWHERE with that rotation folks

  7. garybrian - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:05 PM

Again I ask, why is everybody conceding a place in the Blue Jay rotation to Happ? What has he done to earn it? I haven’t seen anything that would assure him that spot.

  8. buffalo65 - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:19 PM

Not done yet but a good low risk move. Puts them ahead of the yanks if it gets done.
How do you as a Jay fan not like adding a couple hundred inning for
    One year while kids develop?

  9. buffalo65 - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:20 PM

Waiting out a 5 year 100 million asking and signing for 1 and 14. Good job AA if it works.
Happ won’t see an inning for TO.

  10. halladaysbiceps - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:21 PM

dirtydiaper1971 is so happy with this signing that he left a hot steamer in his diaper.

    • themanytoolsofignorance - Mar 8, 2014 at 2:38 PM

I wish he would leave his steamers in his diaper. Sadly he seems the sort to fill his paws with his droppings and heave them at others. I am baffled how someone like you comes in for so much more grief than this toad. I haven’t seen you serially provoke anyone yet this guy goes around like he has some mandate to be a total ass all of the time

      • Old Gator - Mar 8, 2014 at 5:10 PM

Our virtual village idiot does have a mandate. It’s called anencephaly.

      • dirtyharry1971 - Mar 8, 2014 at 6:38 PM

you would all miss me if I didn’t come by here, my posts get the most replies hands down. I am a legend around here, a legend I tell you…

      • themanytoolsofignorance - Mar 9, 2014 at 4:03 AM

You are an ass around here, an ass I tell you…

  11. buffalo65 - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:26 PM

Larry is just Larry. Rarely says much that had any relevance to the story written.

  12. buffalo65 - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:27 PM

If he ends up signing in Baltimore he will make fun of the Jays for not getting him. So predictable.

  13. rockthered1286 - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:27 PM

Except the orioles have now come into the picture. This would ruin Harry’s day. I almost feel guilty…

    • scoutsaysweitersisabust - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:29 PM

I love the irony of the Orioles butting into a thread and ruining Dirty’s day. Oh, how the tables have turned…

      • historiophiliac - Mar 8, 2014 at 4:59 PM

        Orioles as spoilers?

  14. scoutsaysweitersisabust - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:28 PM

I’m going to laugh my a$$ off if he ends up signing with the Orioles. Dirty may just jump in front of a bus.

  15. buffalo65 - Mar 8, 2014 at 1:55 PM

Regardless of what some dummy thinks the jays need to get this done. Fighting out with a division rival, they need the depth. They better not be outspent.

  16. uyf1950 - Mar 8, 2014 at 2:11 PM

Well if the reports are to be believed Santana is coming to the AL East it’s just of matter of will it be the O’s or Jays. The winner of this Santana auction is actually going to be the team that does NOT sign Santana. For all the reasons previously mentioned.

  17. buffalo65 - Mar 8, 2014 at 2:40 PM

I think it’s a good pickup for either team. Jays need him more. Love to see them sign him and leave the yanks in the cellar.

  18. rockthered1286 - Mar 8, 2014 at 2:46 PM

Guys… Santana quoted the great Earl Weaver on Twitter a few days ago and just followed a Baltimore beat writer on Twitter. I mean it’s obvious at this point. Toronto bound.

  19. buffalo65 - Mar 8, 2014 at 3:03 PM

    He followed Jeff Blair too.

  20. rockthered1286 - Mar 8, 2014 at 3:28 PM

Shouldn’t he have decided by now? I mean it IS 5 o’clock somewhere….

Totally worth the loss of respect for that doozie right there.

  21. tfbuckfutter - Mar 8, 2014 at 5:15 PM

If Ervin has a really good year, he could definitely be the difference between 75 wins and 77 wins for the Blue Jays.

  22. rockthered1286 - Mar 8, 2014 at 5:21 PM

Meh. Bud Norris looked solid today. I’d be okay with him at the 5.

  23. buffalo65 - Mar 8, 2014 at 5:27 PM

As long as Miguel Gonzalez isn’t affected. Got him for 5 in my fantasy league.

  24. buffalo65 - Mar 8, 2014 at 7:49 PM

All it took last year was a modest win streak by a bad team and you didn’t have the guts to post for two weeks. Here’s hoping for a decent season. If only you had something constructive to say you wouldn’t have to run and hide when the jays win.

  25. campcouch - Mar 8, 2014 at 11:22 PM

Santana thinks highly of himself. Five year 100 mil…now it’s down to a one year 13 mil deal.
