The Braves could make a run at Ervin Santana

No battle plan survives contact with the enemy, and with the Braves’ plans quickly becoming inoperative, they may be jumping in to the Ervin Santana uncertainty. Dave O’Brien of the AJC reports:

Initially I didn’t think there was anything to the idea of the Braves pursuing him, but now with Beachy having more issues (he left today’s start against the Phillies after two innings due to biceps tightness), I’m hearing from a person connected to the  Royals that the Braves are making a run at the free agent. How serious that is, I don’t know yet.

It’d hard to figure the Braves giving a multi-year deal to a guy who wasn’t on their radar until literally yesterday, but if Santana’s other alleged options fall through, a one-year deal for a contender in a pitcher’s park may not be a bad fallback for him.

If Medlen’s MRI turns out badly later today, Santana may be a good signing by the Braves to salvage some quality innings in a season with high hopes and expectations.

Anybody know how the draft pick compensation would shake out? I also wonder if this $14-15 mil being unavailable for a Mike Minor extension could end up as a major mistake.

I just looked it up and according to MLB.com, the Braves would currently lose pick number 26 in the first round.

Now THIS i could see. Big park. Roomy. He pitches to contact (I have no idea if he means to or not, but his stuff sure gets tattooed) so he needs all the room he can get with a good defence behind him.No less than the superlative Andrelton Simmons will be backing him up. Ignoring FIP, that might be worth as much .03 on the ERA right there. I like this move for Ervin.

so about 3 minutes after beachy leaves a game with sore something or other there’s a braves – santana rumor. this is getting cheesy.

I doubt that the Braves would be willing to pay him $14+ million and give up pick number 26.

They have pick 32 from McCann… It’s a wash in that regard. I think you have to do something be it santana or a trade

When the teams have to get down to their 25 man roster, there will be some half decent pitchers (who are out of options) available in trades or on the waiver wire.
