The Indians announced Tuesday, via Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, that right-hander Justin Masterson will start for the club on Opening Day against the Athletics. That game is scheduled for Monday, March 31 at Oakland’s Coliseum.

It was an easy decision for the Tribe, who will likely follow Masterson this season with Corey Kluber, Zach McAllister, Danny Salazar, and Carlos Carrasco. Not necessarily in that exact order.

Masterson registered an impressive 3.45 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 195 strikeouts across 193 innings last season for the Indians. The 28-year-old is in his final year of salary arbitration and has reportedly been engaging in long-term contract negotiations with Cleveland’s front office this spring in camp.

Yeah, I can’t say I was expecting to see that. Even with the departures of Kazmir and Jimenez. Christ.
