Red Sox prospect gets arrested, acts like a monumental jackwagon

Mar 14, 2014, 4:57 PM EDT

Jon Denny

Yahoo!’s Jeff Passan has a report about one of the more obnoxious baseball player arrests you’ll ever see. The player: Red Sox’ minor league catcher Jon Denney. The reason for the arrest: driving with a suspended license. But the flavor of the arrest is way better than the charge might indicate:

According to police, Denney said “he was a Boston Red Sox player and he didn’t care [sic] he had money and made more money than we would ever see.” When handcuffed, the report said, Denney said “he would be out in no time because of who he played for and that he made three million a year.”

This, by the way, was his second run-in with the police that evening. Earlier, he had been issued a citation and sent home after being pulled over for fishtailing and was then found to have had a restricted license (work and emergencies only, due to a previous DUI ). At the time of the citation he said he was out on the town “Partying and looking to get some [expletive].” I’m assuming that the censored part was not “dinner” or  “some personal enlightenment.”

Just an epic performance by young Mr. Denney, here. He plays the “I’m rich and famous card,” yet, as Passan notes, he’s not really either of those things. Plus he gets bonus points for the previous DUI, the blatant honesty on why he was out on the town and the subtle style which comes from driving a Ford F-150 Raptor, which is about an 80 on the cool bromobile scale.

Well played indeed. Especially for a guy who hit .203 in the Gulf Coast League last year. I think his future is bright.

Should fit in quite well with the rest of the organization.

I don’t think he’ll be getting one of the many WS rings they’ll be giving out in April. Don’t be jealous of the team of the century. I’m sure your team only sucks a little.

      • snoilog - Mar 15, 2014 at 9:10 AM

If it was for that meatball given up to Fat Daddy Ortiz, the Beantown blowhards would be sitting at home watching the Tigers walk thru the WS. Thank the crappy pitching of Benoit and his horseshat fastball

      • mercfan - Mar 15, 2014 at 6:12 PM

Team of the century? Don’t you think it’s a bit early to be talking team of the century? Yeah, I’m sure they were saying that in 1918 too.

      • therooneyskilledwebster - Mar 15, 2014 at 6:14 PM

The facts don’t lie. Three titles and cuz neither of us have a crystal ball and can predict the future, yes, they are the team of the century as of today.

      • clipper222 - Apr 15, 2014 at 11:57 AM

You mean decade, right? I realize New England schools are a little behind in English, but I guess we can chalk math up there too.

Decade is 10 years, century is 100 years. To compare the Red Sox to other MLB teams since 1914 and say they are the “team of the century” is not only wrong, its asinine.

      Jealousy really hurts doesn’t it?

    • evanpenn - Mar 16, 2014 at 5:17 AM

“Jackwagon”? Congratulations, that’s the 1st time I’ve seen that word in print.

Hostorio bite your tongue young lady. As a proud owner of a 1982 ford bronco I must say Fords can be made to be really nice. They certainly don’t come that way, but with a little know how, and some spending, a Ford can be a beautiful thing. I bought mine primarily to be a hunting truck, but I liked it so much I put some real money into it and it’s my every day ride now. Taking the top off is actually a fun way to ride, but it’s a pain putting it back on.

    • historiophiliac - Mar 14, 2014 at 10:03 PM

I might argue that it’s technically not a Ford anymore then….I drive a Ford. She’s noisy and practical but she’s not deluxe.

      • Francisco (FC) - Mar 15, 2014 at 10:29 AM

She’s noisy and practical but she’s not deluxe.

Sounds like an ex-girlfriend of mine.

      • historiophiliac - Mar 15, 2014 at 1:15 PM

Oh, was she also a stick? 😉

      • Francisco (FC) - Mar 15, 2014 at 2:16 PM

No, but she knew how to handle one :-)

    • sumkat - Mar 15, 2014 at 3:51 AM

did you used to have an el camino with shag carpeting and think it was “a beautiful thing”?

As much as I’d like to joke about the Red Sox adding another criminal to their organization (does nobody else remember that Clay Buchholz stole computers from children?), this isn’t really funny. This kid seems to have a pretty serious alcohol problem, and if he doesn’t get some pretty serious help (or maybe even if he does), it’s only a matter of time before he becomes the next Matt Bush, except with far less promise/talent to begin with.

If the Red Sox front office is wise, they will send him to rehab instead of back to spring training. He needs a drastic intervention, because clearly the arrests and the loss of his license don’t seem to deter him from the problematic behavior. Someone is going to get hurt or killed if he doesn’t clean up his act.

Guys who talk about getting “expletive” never get “expletive”

  5. thisdamnbox - Mar 14, 2014 at 10:57 PM

Boo, Jon Denney, boo, boo, Jon Denney…

  6. jrbdmb - Mar 14, 2014 at 11:17 PM

Trade him to the Dodgers immediately.

  7. keltictim - Mar 14, 2014 at 11:48 PM

It’s still got Ford DNA. It’s like a decent girl who gets surgically enhanced to become a smoke show, underneath the plastic she’s still a decent girl.

  8. cmtill14 - Mar 15, 2014 at 2:17 AM

He’d fit in with the D-Backs pretty well, based on their tendency to throw at opposing teams.

  9. strictlythedanks - Mar 15, 2014 at 2:25 AM

    say it aint so

  10. sawxalicious - Mar 15, 2014 at 3:27 AM

Douche-Bag level 17….he needs to seriously be reprimanded and put on double-secret probation. I know it might sound like a stretch, but young guys like this that combine alcohol, inflated egos, a sense of entitlement, a feeling of being above the law, and a demonstrated lack of good decision-making usually end up killing/maiming someone in a DUI wreck, or sexually assaulting someone. This incident should be a HUGE red flag for the Red Sox. A rotten apple can spoil the bunch, as they say…

    • evanpenn - Mar 16, 2014 at 5:19 AM

Saw, I gave you a thumbs down because anybody can see his douche-bag level is a mere 15.

  11. nymets4ever - Mar 15, 2014 at 12:06 PM

Uh…what exactly was the point of bringing the make and model of his truck into this? Sorry he can’t be cool like you and drive a Smartcar or whatever crapmobile you putter around town in. Haha

As I recall, John Denny was no day at the beach, either.

    • binarymath - Mar 15, 2014 at 5:17 PM

Unbelievable! I posted a John Denny / “Country Breakfast” Butler comment yesterday. What are the odds on 2 John Denny references in 24 hours. Could be a bad John Denny karma thing…

For more (than you probably ever wanted to know) about John Denny:

      Yesterday’s comment:

        That was a great post.

Denny’s Cy Young season really came out of nowhere, didn’t it?

That guy was a pretty tough interview his whole career.

  13. keltictim - Mar 15, 2014 at 12:37 PM

An el camino with shag carpet sounds pretty cool. As long as it’s done with class. It has to be classy.

    • yahmule - Mar 15, 2014 at 12:48 PM

      Hell yeah!

  14. keltictim - Mar 15, 2014 at 1:43 PM

The bronco is a stick I call it brad. Named after a certain handsome coach. The el camino is just a poor boys dream. Question do they still sell the disco balls that hang from the rear view mirror? Shag carpet demands that.

  15. timpaz - Mar 15, 2014 at 2:17 PM

Seems like he will fit right in on the Red Sox

  16. musketmaniac - Mar 15, 2014 at 5:06 PM

girls to Ford’s? apples and oranges. Condemned in the court of public opinion.

  17. keltictim - Mar 15, 2014 at 5:58 PM

Timpaz exactly how do you justify that statement? Aside from the infamous beer and chicken episode ( which wasn’t a legal issue) the Red Sox have zero history as a team with legal issues.

Girls and fords are not apples to oranges. As long as both are well maintained they will give you years of pleasure.

    A-ROD PART 2 !!!

  19. csiegert4 - Mar 16, 2014 at 1:07 AM

Hope everyone remembers this name and this incident just in case he gets a little further. He doesn’t deserve to play at all anymore…what an entitled piece of trash. This is extremely telling of this idiots horrible personality.

    • evanpenn - Mar 16, 2014 at 5:21 AM

Look at him….he won’t get any farther.

  20. keltictim - Mar 16, 2014 at 10:24 AM

In the next few years VW will be bringing its diesel pick up truck to the states. That will be a very interesting ride. It does pretty well in Europe from what I’ve read, I just don’t really understand who the target demographic will be here. When I think VW I don’t think about my employees, or other contractors on my job sites. No sir, VW conjures up images of just the opposite, cute lil college girls talking on their phone, screaming the lyrics to the latest Miley spears song.

    • jimeejohnson - Mar 16, 2014 at 11:22 AM

I owned a Volkswagen Golf diesel and let me tell you: it sucked! No power whatsoever. But, it did get great gas mileage when it wasn’t in the shop getting fixed many times per year.

  21. zuludelta45 - Mar 16, 2014 at 12:37 PM

Why is there no details of where he was arrested? Empty story…….clean it up.

  22. senatorsguy - Mar 16, 2014 at 1:53 PM

Fat drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

  23. pennyanks - Mar 17, 2014 at 8:39 PM

Actually, sounds like a Red Sox fan more than one of their players.

  24. rrsm53 - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:03 AM

I hope that the little troll gets his butt handed to him. Suspend him for the season and no pay see how rich and charming the little twit is then. Surprise he didnt use the “Do You know who I am” and then sound off.

Another professional athlete who needs a wake up call……………………………………..
