The Orioles are playing Nelson Cruz in center field today

Well, this is fantastic.

The Orioles will be a must-watch in their Grapefruit League game against the Yankees this afternoon, as Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun notes that Nelson Cruz will make the start in center field. Oh, but that’s not all. He’ll be flanked by Delmon Young in right field and Steve Pearce in left. Today’s starter, Chris Tillman, has a 41.6 percent fly ball rate for his career, so it should be fun out there.

Don’t worry, Orioles fans (and pitchers), it would take some unique circumstances to see this sort of defensive alignment during the regular season. This is mostly a matter of the team not having enough bodies around, as Nick Markakis is banged up, Adam Jones is away from the team following the birth of his son, and David Lough isn’t available. Enjoy it while you can.

So why couldn’t the Yankees play Mo in center?

    • jcmeyer10 - Mar 15, 2014 at 10:29 AM

So thinks Mo as he rocks back and forth on the Wooden Throne the Twins bestowed to him.

He’ll be fine as long as he doesn’t have to make a catch by a wall to win a World Series.

What an awesome outfield. It will be an exciting game to watch.

I say put Soriano at second, as many have here, have suggested, and let’s make this a 3 ring circus.

Pretend the first have isn’t there.

Did you ever watch “To Have and Have Not”?

      • spudchukar - Mar 15, 2014 at 12:40 PM

Seeing how I actually live in Hemingway’s cabin I should have probably seen it, especially since Hawks directed, but to be honest I don’t remember it. Bogie and McCall though is a can’t miss.

I was trying to come up with a clever way of excising the first have, but couldn’t put it together.

You do live in an interesting place.

Yep, I love it. Used to get to B.C., a lot, Nelson, New Denver, and Ainsworth, but it is quite a way from here.

Watching Delmon Young play RF will make this alone worth it.

  6. chip56 - Mar 15, 2014 at 10:55 AM

    This could be spectacular

The problem will be when Young and Cruz collide on a pop up and knock each other out for the season

In a related story, the Oriole pitching staff rose en masse and staged a wildcat strike.

The O’s are playing the Yankees Q-team today. I think it will be an accomplishment if someone hits a ball to the outfield at any point.

O’s win. Delmon makes some grabs. So does Nelson. What’s the big deal?

Prediction: O’s have better record at the end of the year than Yankees!

    Needs more Raul Ibanez.
