Astros choose Scott Feldman as Opening Day starter

Houston has named Scott Feldman as its Opening Day starter after signing the veteran right-hander to a three-year, $30 million contract as a free agent this offseason.

Feldman is 31 years old with a 4.62 career ERA and it would be easy to make some jokes about him being the Astros’ choice, but whatever. They’re really bad now and in the relatively near future they’ll probably cease being really bad and, within a few years, there’s a pretty reasonable chance that they’ll be very good.

And in the meantime they have a guy like Feldman around to eat some innings and, for this season at least, take the mound in Game 1. Last season he threw 182 innings with a 3.86 ERA in 30 starts for the Cubs and Orioles, and now Feldman is returning to Texas after playing the first eight seasons of his career for the Rangers.

Announcement: HardballTalk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $100,000 Fantasy Baseball league for Opening Day’s games (March 31). It’s $25 to join and first prize is $15,000. Starts at 1:05pm ET on Opening Day. Here’s the FanDuel link.

Being named the Astros Opening Day starter is like winning a Marlon Brando look-a-like contest in the late-career category.

    Houston’s starters:
    S. Feldman
    J. Cosart
    B. Peacock
    B. Oberholtzer
    J. Williams

Not like they picked Feldman over Kershaw….

I’m sure it was between him and Cosart. You’re paying Feldman to be your innings eater, so he should be their front line starter…

Gives him a solid chance at 18+ losses.

Appel, Rondon, Foltyenevich, and Ashner Wojnekowski are all just around the corner…

Feldman will be a solid 3-4 very soon.

Cosart, Olberholtzer, and the crop around the corner are all capable 1/2 starters by 2015.

This team is getting real good, real fast.

Those who don’t follow the Stros close, don’t understand that this club is being built the right way from single A up. It is being built with a surplus of strong arms, and high quality bats.

Correa, Singleton, Springer, Grossman, Hoes will all be future stars.
They are #1 picks, and trades of our top mlb players.

2015… We will be very good.

I think they might be good beginning in 2017. Not a knock. Just a guess based on how long it will realistically take to get all these guys up, and then a couple years to develop further.

I choose the Astros as eternal cellar dwellers.

If you start following baseball and learn what makes a good product on the field, you wont make comments that make you look uneducated.

Holy sh!t, it’s an Astros fan. Your boys are only 10 years away from relevance. Hang tight.

I had to do a double take when I read this headline. Feldman is the opening day starter? I guess I didn’t realize the extent to which this team sucked. Although I knew it was considerable.
