Logan Morrison said something controversial on Twitter again

Mar 17, 2014, 10:18 PM EST

Another day, another controversial tweet from Logan Morrison:

You know, because white males have had it so tough. Yikes.

Of course, Morrison has had a number of Twitter missteps in the past, ranging from homophobic comments to criticizing mothers for breast-feeding in public. You’d like to think he’d develop a filter after multiple incidents of social media insensitivity, but it hasn’t happened yet. None of this means that he is a bad person, but his sense of humor is a headache for a P.R. team. Have fun with this one, Mariners.

My grandmother used to tell me, “Just because you can think of it doesn’t mean you have to do it”. Gawd Almighty.

  2. babyfarkmcgeezax - Mar 17, 2014 at 10:22 PM

    What a douche

    • infieldhit - Mar 17, 2014 at 11:46 PM

      That word is so overused.

But it applies in this case.

      • karlkolchak - Mar 18, 2014 at 9:09 AM

Word is only overused because there are so many of them out there.

  3. tfbuckfutter - Mar 17, 2014 at 10:28 PM

Dude….at least wait until you’re done playing baseball to start focusing on your followup career as a Fox News regular.

  4. vegagreenleaf - Mar 17, 2014 at 10:30 PM

His comments aren’t newsworthy. Stop making something of nothing.

    • caeser12 - Mar 18, 2014 at 12:03 PM

Why his comments ARE newsworthy is because of the fact that there is a huge Native American Community in WA State.

  5. syphermce - Mar 17, 2014 at 10:35 PM

Sorry, but i’m not seeing the controversial part in his tweet here.

    • tfbuckfutter - Mar 17, 2014 at 10:45 PM

Well, ya see….he makes a lot of money playing a game, and he’s kvetching about having to pay taxes….and is suggesting he’s actually jealous of Native Americans who (whether it’s true or not) don’t have to pay taxes.

This could be construed as controversial because while he is probably driving a car that costs more than the average middle-class American’s house, the average Native American on a reservation lives below the poverty line.

And also, the built in hilarity of the cycle of poverty and drug and alcohol abuse that goes along with it.

Oh, and you know….also the fact that Americans slaughtered tons of Native Americans and stole their land….and now he’s jealous because they don’t have to pay taxes to a government that, not only did they not have any interest in forming, but also destroyed their culture and way of life.

Either that or they just meant his really awful grammar.

      Probably that.

      • monupai - Mar 18, 2014 at 2:46 AM

Native Americans don’t have to pay taxes! That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in write awhile. .. Let it be noted that I am full blooded paiute.

    • shaggylocks - Mar 17, 2014 at 10:47 PM

Imagine if the Nazis had won WWII, and a German had tweeted something about how jealous he was that the few remaining Jews living on the reservations didn’t have to pay taxes. F’ed up, right? Yeah, so that’s why this is f’ed up.

      • sumkat - Mar 18, 2014 at 3:41 AM

America on par with Nazi Germany

Liberal philosophy in a nut shell

      • Old Gator - Mar 18, 2014 at 6:58 AM

He didn’t put them on a “par.” He wrote “imagine if the Nazis had won.” Reflexive, sound-bite programmed Conservative stupidity in a nutshell.

      • voteforno6 - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:21 AM

Ol’ Gator, while I understand your point, I’m going to have to invoke Godwin’s Law here. Shaggylocks loses.

      • Kevin S. - Mar 18, 2014 at 8:10 AM

Except… our systemic extermination of Native tribes parallels quite well to what the Nazis did to the Jews, Poles, Slavs, LGBT, disabled and a whole other host of “undesireables.” The only real difference is it took us longer to do it. It isn’t liberal philosophy, it’s historical fact.

  6. kcroyal - Mar 17, 2014 at 10:45 PM

You mean if only my ancestors had been raped and murdured and been part of the worst genocide in North America I could get a tax break?

What a douche. Definitely a republican.

    • kiwicricket - Mar 18, 2014 at 12:48 AM

      Serious question….
What makes you think that? And what has someones political teamy-ness have to do with making a comment like that?

      • koufaxmitzvah - Mar 18, 2014 at 8:14 AM

Republicans in America are known for blaming the poor and downtrodden for the economic issues of the country. As opposed to the urge for rich people to avoid their taxes by plopping cash in off-shore accounts that don’t pay taxes. So while the assessment of LoMo being an unhinged right wing whiner may be unfair, it stands the test of simple things that cause grave concern.

      • infieldhit - Mar 18, 2014 at 12:25 PM

I guess it’s not so much that only Republicans say stupid things, just that this is the kind of stupid thing that stupid Republicans would say.

  7. Reflex - Mar 17, 2014 at 10:54 PM

    He’s gonna love Seattle….

I doubt the feeling will be mutual however…

  8. cur'68 - Mar 17, 2014 at 11:06 PM

    Shut up, Morrision.

    • 18thstreet - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:17 AM

Who is his agent? Because that agency is absolutely failing him.

  9. blabidibla - Mar 17, 2014 at 11:17 PM

Not like there are a lot of Native Americans up in the SEA area…oops.

  10. kiwicricket - Mar 18, 2014 at 12:10 AM

Perhaps ask Jacoby Ellsbury? He will pay more taxes this year than what Logan will for the rest of his life combined. But by all means, post idiotic things on twitter and try figure an answer in that fashion

    • infieldhit - Mar 18, 2014 at 12:57 AM

Would’ve been interesting if those Ellsbury-to-Mariners rumors ended up panning out. Still, plenty of time for Morrison to offend the teammates he does have.

  11. President Charles Logan - Mar 18, 2014 at 12:50 AM

good lord just BAN these professional athletes from posting on Twitter ….. that site is nothing but a whole pile of useless

    • voteforno6 - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:23 AM

No, more athletes should be encouraged to be on Twitter. The world is a much more interesting place because of Twitter. After all, how else would we be exposed to the comedic stylings of Larry Jones and Logan Morrison?

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Mar 18, 2014 at 11:17 AM

        Who says Morrison is funny?

    • sportsdrenched - Mar 18, 2014 at 9:41 AM

Because banning Twitter would stop people from saying dumb things.

  12. mattyheisman - Mar 18, 2014 at 1:01 AM

Seems the writer of the article believes in the whole white guilt/white privelege idea. Yeah the idiot shouldn’t have tweeted something insensitive but give me a break. It was an overly sarcastic tweet from a fringe MLB player. Who cares?

    • chilguy - Mar 18, 2014 at 2:18 AM

That would be okay if he was being sarcastic, but his track record indicates that he’s being totally serious.

In light of that, he deserves to be hammered.

  13. monupai - Mar 18, 2014 at 2:49 AM

*Don’t know why”write” was in my sentence. ..

  14. denny65 - Mar 18, 2014 at 4:27 AM

There are several casinos here in the Seattle area that Morrison could buy into when his playing days are over.

And those days may be over much, much sooner than he thinks.

(Still haven’t figured out why Jack Z took a flyer on this guy.)

    • Old Gator - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:05 AM

Thank Buddha he’s the Crew of the Minnow’s problem now. I’m still trying to figure out why the Feesh hung onto Tweeter for so long. There were people in the organization who really thought he would blossom into a run-producer once all of his orthopedic issues cleared up – yet year after year he put up some of the worst RISP numbers in the league. Well, he gave us a priceless moment when he bared his mantideophobia, but how absurd was it for someone so vehemently anti-mammary to be living in Macondo, anyway? They’re everywhere down here.

      • vivabear - Mar 18, 2014 at 10:38 AM

RISP numbers? Come on Felcher, you know those don’t mean anything: small sample size!!!

      • Old Gator - Mar 18, 2014 at 2:22 PM

Ah, Sewerbear emerges from a week of snoring away like Chthulhu and shakes the effluvium from his fur. You’re just still bitter that the Feesh didn’t think Matt Garza was good enough for him. But you’re right about the small samples size – insofar as Tweeter never drove in enough runs to establish a meaningful curve – but, as usual, for all the wrong reasons.

      • vivabear - Mar 18, 2014 at 5:16 PM

Numbers with RISP for a player isn’t indicative of anything, Old Felcher. For simplicity’s sake, since you are an idiot: I’d much rather have a player with better overall stats than the player who’s overall stats are worse, but HE HITS SO GOOD IN CLUTCH SITUATIONS!!!

Now, now Felcherito; you know what you implied was that the marlins had the option of either Garza or Zambrano for the exact same package given to the cubs. Don’t try to change history to make yourself look like less of an a$$hole.

  15. thebadguyswon - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:11 AM

When your career is defined more by what you say on Twitter than on the field, you’ve got issues. Not to mention the issues you have in the first place using a term like “jealy”. What a d-bag.

  16. janessa31888 - Mar 18, 2014 at 7:24 AM

Just because I vote Republican does not mean I share or support Mr. Morrison’s views. Contrary to popular belief on HBT, we are not all jerks!!!!!!

    • Kevin S. - Mar 18, 2014 at 8:14 AM

Then stop voting for officials who routinely say jerkish things.

      • Old Gator - Mar 18, 2014 at 8:43 AM

        Unlike Democrats?

      • Kevin S. - Mar 19, 2014 at 6:34 AM

Democrats have their own buffoonery, but they rarely find themselves Todd Akin’d out of a winnable race.

    • stlouis1baseball - Mar 21, 2014 at 11:07 AM

I appreciate what you are trying to do Janessa. But you are wasting your time. But again…I do appreciate where you are coming from.

  17. paperlions - Mar 18, 2014 at 8:33 AM

I think the biggest controversy is that Morrison doesn’t know how to use a search engine. Does he think the entire internet is composed of twitter?

A quick google search could have answered his question in about 15 seconds and informed him that, Yes, Native American’s have to pay federal income taxes as well as state and local taxes that are conducted in those jurisdictions….just like everyone else.

    • Old Gator - Mar 18, 2014 at 8:44 AM

Buddha only knows whether or not he thinks African Americans pay taxes either.

      • timmmah10 - Mar 18, 2014 at 9:10 AM

True, but this country continues to be over sensitive, as well as hold athletes to the high standards that they don’t deserve.

Sorry, but to me this is a complete non-story. LoMo is a personality. He’s basically an internet clown… that is a below average 1B. He’s proven he is a doucher… so why are we surprised he keeps on keepin’ on?

    • indaburg - Mar 18, 2014 at 9:20 AM

What he should do is start his own religion. Then he’d be tax exempt.

  18. blabidibla - Mar 18, 2014 at 10:08 AM

    Poor man’s John Rocker.

    • Old Gator - Mar 18, 2014 at 2:24 PM

I’m not sure about that analogy: Rocker’s virulence versus Tweeter’s ineptitude?

  19. ctony1216 - Mar 18, 2014 at 11:35 AM

Didn’t tax dollars pay for the stadium that Logan Morrison played in while in Miami? Well, most stadiums now are partly funded by tax dollars. And the revenue and profits go to the players and owners. As Morrison would say, I’m so jealy.

  20. zdravit - Mar 18, 2014 at 1:14 PM

Look at all of the outraged bleeding hearts on here. Good job, LoMo.

    • Old Gator - Mar 18, 2014 at 2:25 PM

If your idea of being a bigoted jackwagon is a “good job,” I still don’t feel sorry for you.

      • zdravit - Mar 19, 2014 at 1:37 PM

And there’s their fearless leader. Always policing the comments and looking for ways to get offended.

  21. rdanie29 - Mar 18, 2014 at 4:07 PM

Wow, I didn’t know there were so many anal retentive, politically correct snobs reading Hardball Talk. I guess it’s OK for you to have an opinion but not Logan. And to answer his question, yes, if you are an Indian, you collect money from the government but you don’t pay taxes. I won’t call then native americans because they aren’t, they came here from Eurasia on the Alaskan land bridge. They might have been first, but they ain’t native.

  22. wolfmagic2012 - Mar 18, 2014 at 4:27 PM

Complete Dipstick. This just put you at the bottom of Ms fans list genius.

  23. fearthehoody - Mar 18, 2014 at 6:23 PM

He stinks, and add him to the list M’s: Chone Figgins, Jeff Cirillo, Rich Aurilla, Carl Everette, Richie Sexson, Milton Bradley, Jack Cust, Mike Sweeney, Ryan Langerhans….

  24. veracityguy - Mar 18, 2014 at 8:05 PM

Native Americans should pay taxes as should all Americans. If they’re poor then they have little if anything to pay, just like any other American. But if they own casinos and golf courses and theaters they sure as hell should be paying taxes. Oh and as far as us taking their land, go read some native American history. They weren’t one big happy family waiting for us to invade. They fought among themselves all the time. Many tribes slaughtered other tribes and took their land. If you want to go back in history then you better pick your date; The Roman empire? The Byzantine empire? The Mongols? The Goths? People have been fighting over land since there were people.
