Umpire gets knocked out of a game by a line drive

Mar 17, 2014, 5:00 PM EDT

Umpire Brad Myers

Scary scene in Goodyear at today’s Reds-Indians game. Umpire Brad Myers left the game after being hit “in groin region” by a Brandon Phillips line drive. He was down on the field for several minutes but then was up under his own power and taken from the field on a golf cart.

The game was already being officiated by only three field umpires. MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian reports that replay umpire John Tumpane, who was in the replay truck, replaced Myers on the field. MLB umpire supervisor Randy Marsh happened to be in attendance at Goodyear, and he is taking over as the replay umpire.

Tough way to leave a game for Myers. Nice coverage by the rest of the crew.

    Cup = good idea

    And people say Brandon Philips never gets on base by balls.

    So Phillips got two balls on one pitch? That’s gotta be some kind of record

      I’m assuming/hoping/praying he was wearing a cup. Not sure if taking a liner to the cup beats the record set by Jordany “The Cup is Empty” Valdespin getting Verlandered for his HBPiD.

    The news here might end up being how Phillips puts his arm around another ump and throws his head back in laughter about… something, while Myers is still being attended to. What the hell, Phillips?

      I suppose if you’re looking for more reasons to hate a guy that likes to smile while not quite being the player he thinks he is, then yes that’s the news in this story.

    Was the headline, ” Balls and Strikes” ?

  7. historiophiliac - Mar 18, 2014 at 9:58 AM

    Craig, you totally have to work on your headlines. I skipped this the first time and only came back to it because I saw a headline about it elsewhere that indicated: Ump hit in coconuts by line drive. You know I would never intentionally miss a HBLDiD. tsk tsk
