Back injury likely to send Brendan Ryan to the disabled list

Brendan Ryan was slated to be the Yankees’ utility infielder and Derek Jeter insurance, but instead he’s likely to begin the season on the disabled list with a back injury.

Ryan hasn’t played in a game since March 4 and tweaked his back warming up yesterday, canceling plans to rejoin the Yankees’ lineup. Ryan and manager Joe Girardi both indicated to Jorge Castillo of the Newark Star Ledger that he’s running out of time to get ready for Opening Day, as he’s totaled just nine plate appearances all spring.

New York acquired Ryan from Seattle in September and then re-signed him to a two-year, $5 million deal, deciding the slick-fielding, poor-hitting veteran was good to have around in case Jeter once again can’t stay healthy.

Announcement: HardballTalk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $100,000 Fantasy Baseball league for Opening Day’s games (March 31). It’s $25 to join and first prize is $15,000. Starts at 1:05pm ET on Opening Day. Here’s the FanDuel link.

Who had Brendan Ryan in the pool for First Yankee Infielder to hit the DL? That has to pay out handsomely, considering the field.

My money would have been on Roberts.

As long as it is not Teixeira, I think they can weather the loss of any others. Nobody is expecting a ton of production out of Roberts, Jeter or Johnson, so the expected downgrade from any of them to Dean Anna, Eduardo Nunez or some other utility type would not be so great. We saw what “replacement level” looks like at 1B last season, and it is not pretty.

Seriously, I think he would have been the last guy I would have picked.

Its not a done deal yet.
Jacoby could still swoop in and steal the thunder.

Really not the guy we are looking for anyway. I say give Solarte a shot.

Given the packed schedule (few days off) to start the season, this seems like modestly bad news. Jeter’s not playing shortstop for 13 straight days.

    • spudchukar - Mar 21, 2014 at 1:23 PM

“Playing shortstop” isn’t a very accurate description of Jeter. Manning perhaps, occupying acceptable, but when a guy is best “clocked” by a calendar, action is minimal. Playing implies visual movement, and time-lapse photography is needed to record his “playing”.

Fine. Someone needs to stand between second base and third base, wearing a glove. I expect that person will be Derek Jeter.

Perhaps the Yanks could find a cheap Rodin knock-off. Same range.

        Tebow? I hear he’s available.

        Made me laugh.

Gosh, I sure hope this injury doesn’t impact Ryan’s hitting, I mean, his hitting is so…oh, never mind.
