The Braves cut Freddy Garcia

Mar 24, 2014, 1:46 PM EDT

With their top two starters gone for the season with Tommy John surgery, you’d figure that Atlanta would be a safe place to be if you’re a starter looking to make the big club. Not necessarily:

Rather surprising. Garcia has not had a great spring training, but nor has he been atrocious either. Garcia would’ve been owed a $1.5 million roster bonus if he made the team, so one wonders if that had anything to do with it. Maybe they hope no one snags him and then re-signs him in a week?

Or, maybe they just want to go in a different direction. The rotation, as of now, looks to be Julio Tehran, Ervin Santana — assuming he’s ready for Opening Day — Alex Wood, who has been great this spring, David Hale, who no one thought would be in the mix and … Mike Minor eventually. Gavin Floyd, eventually. Basically, three dudes who are healthy and ready to go at the moment and . . . Gus Schlosser? Anyone?

Strange move.

Santana won’t be ready on opening day. He’ll debut on April 12. Minor two weeks after that, probably, and Gavin Floyd a week or two later. They’re hoping to tread water until around May 5, when they can start running out Santana, Minor, Teheran, Floyd and Wood.

But, counter-intuitively, yes, Garcia is a victim of their lack of depth. When Beachy and Medlen were in there at a comined $8m or so, they could spend $1.5m on Garcia to keep Wood’s innings down. Now that they had to drop $14m on Santana (on top of paying Beachy’s and Medlen’s salaries) the $1m difference between Garcia and playing Gwinnett-Roulette is harder to stomach.

Just curious but do you bet the red or black if you are a Braves fan?

What a classless move. If they never wanted him in the first place, why bother bringing him in for spring training? The public consensus was that he had a chance to make the team either as a starter or a long-man even before all the injuries hit. This guy was huge down the stretch for the Braves last season and even started a playoff game and pitched solidly. He’s done more than enough to earn a spot in the opening day rotation especially considering all in the injuries they have. The obsession with velocity and “stuff” is getting out of control. You have to be able to “pitch” not just “throw”. Freddy’s stuff might not be all that great anymore but he’s a pitcher. Can’t say the same about whoever no-name minor leaguer they tapped to replace him. It’s not that long ago that he was written off yet put together one heck of a campaign for the Yankees in the AL East, which is the toughest division to pitch in baseball. I hope someone gives him a shot and he has a comeback year.

      Idiot.

    • Pat Richardson - Mar 24, 2014 at 3:25 PM

The problem is they can pay 2 or 3 ‘no-name minor leaguers’ with the money they save by releasing him. This was destined to happen once they signed Ervin.

    For sure idiot

Blue Jays new #5 starter. Braves got Santana, Jays should get Garcia. And Garcia should have a better year if there’s any justice.

I bet Detroit would have traded something good to get him.
