Kevin Frandsen leaves the Phillies for the Nationals

OK, so this probably isn’t big enough news to add any fuel to the rivalry, but infielder Kevin Frandsen is signing with the Nationals after declining an assignment to the minors from the Phillies yesterday.

Frandsen forfeited a $900,000 salary by turning down the Phillies’ attempt to move him to Triple-A after taking him off the 40-man roster earlier this week. Presumably he’s been all but assured of cracking the Nationals’ Opening Day roster after Washington released utility infielder candidate Jamey Carroll yesterday.

Frandsen is 32 years old and hit .280 with seven homers and a .723 OPS in two seasons for the Phillies, but he’s not an ideal utility infielder because he’s logged just 198 career innings at shortstop in the majors and hasn’t played an inning at the position in the big leagues since 2009.

Announcement: HardballTalk’s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $100,000 Fantasy Baseball league for Opening Day’s games (March 31). It’s $25 to join and first prize is $15,000. Starts at 1:05pm ET on Opening Day. Here’s the FanDuel link.

Hardnosed player that will bust his gut, but just not talented enough to play a major role. That said enjoyed his play and I’m sorry to see him go.

Who said he was going to play a major role? He’s a back up corner infielder. Know idea why the Phillies let him go, good pick up for the Nats.

Yeah it was a pretty dumb move depth wise. It’s not like Reid Brignac is a better bench option at this point.

With Galvis being out, they need someone who can play SS, so they chose Cesar Hernandez over Frandsen. Like greymares said, he’s a gritty, not-so-talented player with a below average glove. Not a huge loss.

Say “Se Ya!” to your friend Domonic Brown now Kevin cause you won’t be showing off some pitchers from now on.

Well Danny Espinosa is a guy who would play SS for the Nats, if needed. Frandsen gives them some flexibility at the corners.

Ultimately, Frandsen’s 32 years of spry youthfulness was not quite old enough for Ruin Tomorrow’s tastes.

The Phillies haven’t had a blueprint for this team since Pat Gillick stepped down. Ruin has no clue how to build a major league baseball team. Dave Montgomery has to clean house and stop with the hiring from within philosophy. It didn’t work with Ed Wade and it hasn’t worked with Amaro!! Bring in new blood before this dope sets the organization back evenmore. Bring in a Mike Arbuckle type (maybe from St. Louis) to do the drafting and hire someone else from outside the organization for the GM job. We haven’t had any home grown talent since Arbuckle drafted Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, and Cole Hamels. Pull the trigger Monty before it’s too late or get used to an empty ballpark and a lot of long miserable summers!!!
