Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics have designated outfielder Michael Taylor for assignment. Sam Fuld, Taylor’s competition for the reserve outfielder job, made the team as a result.

Taylor had a great spring, slashing .274/.348/.532 in 62 at-bats. Fuld was nearly as good, posting a .271/.348/.475 line in 59 at-bats.

Taylor came over to the Athletics in December 2009 from the Blue Jays in the Brett Wallace trade. He has performed well at Triple-A Sacramento over the past four seasons but has had few opportunities to prove himself at the big league level. He’ll likely draw some interest based on his solid spring.

Houston could use him, now that they no longer have Brett Wallace.

If it were last season and Houston were still running a tryout camp at the major league level, I think they would have interest in Taylor – reminds me of another toolsy OF they tried, Jason Maxwell (now in KC). But at this point they seem more interested in a player of less upside but more certainty of performance in Alex Presley. Everyone knew Taylor would likely be available this spring, the Astros probably could have acquired him if they really wanted him….

Interesting how Brett Wallace came up…..last year, when both Taylor and Wallace were clearly struggling in their organizations, I suggested that perhaps another Wallace-for-Taylor trade might be in the offing….but the A’s probably had seen enough of Wallace the first time they had him.

Good idea, but there are a few bottom feeders who could possibly claim him before the Phillies have their turn.

        OTHER bottom feeders you mean

      • proudlycanadian - Mar 29, 2014 at 9:11 PM

Houston, Miami, White Sox, Cubs, Twins, and the Mariners are ahead of the Phillies.

right. I was making a phillies are bottom feeders joke.

He won’t make it to the phillies, I agree

Not sure how much Taylor will hit in the majors, but he’s an athletic dynamic outfielder. I would take him over Drew Stubbs in a heartbeat. Someone gives this kid a chance.

Between Taylor and Billy Burns, the A’s are going to have an awfully solid AAA OF.
