30 Seconds to Know: Expanded Replay in MLB

Mar 31, 2014, 1:00 PM EDT

NBC Sports has a new video feature that gives you all the basics of a given topic in lightning-round fashion. We call it 30 Seconds To Know, and the name pretty much says it all.

Our first baseball installment: the replay rule. Let’s see if I can beat the buzzer:

I don’t have 30 seconds. Can you summarize it in 10?

    Who’s the one expert?

    Nice job, Tyler Clippard–er, Craig.

Last night, I saw a piece on the fancy new replay center at MLBHQ. Looks like they’ve gone with the NHL approach, at least in that respect. Umpires in the replay center can start watching a replay before a challenge is even made. At least, that saves time on the actual replay.

Only real problem was the umpire at the relpay center: Joe West. Doesn’t help the credibility of the replay system. Well that, and the reporting that some managers are looking for ways to use replay challenges to delay the game.

I had to watch an 18 second ad to watch a 30 second video… You win that round, sponsors.
