Andrew McCutchen’s mom sang the National Anthem

Apr 1, 2014, 12:48 PM EDT

Yesterday was a big day for Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen, as Barry Bonds presented him with the NL MVP trophy and his mom sang the National Anthem at PNC Park:

Pertina McCutchen has sung the National Anthem at other Pirates games and that seems like a pretty cool tradition.

She’s got a great voice. Unfortunately, she sung the anthem like she was trying to butcher it. No sense of tempo (or didn’t care about tempo), and the ending was an off-key horror.

Good thing you took music appreciation class at community college so you could freakin criticize the dude’s mom.

So just because she’s Andrew McCutchen’s mom, her vocal performance is above criticism?

      • apkyletexas - Apr 1, 2014 at 1:47 PM

Yeah, or pretty much anyone else’s mom that’s not a professional singer that goes up in front of 40,000 live fans and a national TV audience. That can’t be easy. She should be applauded.

Ten years of guitar and professional lessons. But don’t let that spoil your manufactured narrative.

      • drewsylvania - Apr 1, 2014 at 1:59 PM

So because she went up in front of a stage (which she’s done many times before, by the way), I’m supposed to say she sounded great?

If that’s your standard, you might consider upholding similarly stringent standards for not jumping to conclusions.

So you took some guitar lessons, and now you are the self-appointed mom-singing-critic? Glad you straightened that out for me. Makes perfect sense now.

Jesus, man, you’re making your state look bad.

In fairness, musically, the SSB is a disaster.

She gave a nice interview yesterday too. Cutch is fortunate.

She did better than I could do but given typical standards of pregame performances, she wasn’t very good. Gets a pass for birthing the face of the franchise though

She did butcher the song. Sounds like a great person!

Awful singer. Hell of a mom though.

    Careful guys–you might upset apkyletexas.

Her biggest mistake was that she thanked the pirates for recognizing HER talent. lol is that what the pirates were doing.

Couldn’t listen to it. Last time I heard such wanton butchery of the national anthem was in the Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston heyday. The end nearly had me clutching the porcelain. The voice itself was great, the execution was so bad that F. Scott Key is probably rolling in his grave…

…of course, he probably had no idea his words would be put into the National Anthem of the United States. Weakest anthem words ever. The Canadian one is much much better.
