In the wake of Will Middlebrookscalf injury the Red Sox have signed Ryan Roberts to help fill in at third base, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com.

Roberts was released by the Cubs at the end of spring training and hasn’t topped a .700 OPS since 2011 with the Diamondbacks, hitting .247 with five homers in limited action for the Rays last season at age 32.

He does offer plenty of positional versatility defensively and figures to see most of his action against left-handed pitching, off whom he’s hit .266 with 21 homers and a .785 OPS in 601 career plate appearances.

(Roberts also significantly increases the Red Sox’s average tattoo count, which is always a huge factor in any pennant race.)

    Why not bring up Ceccini?

    • 18thstreet - Apr 7, 2014 at 12:20 PM

Because he’s really young, and can probably use more at bats and innings before getting called up. His OPS fell 200 points last year when he made the jump from Salem to Portland (60 games in each place.)

At this moment, I would guess Brock Holt \o/ is probably a better player. But whether he is or isn’t, there’s no harm in having Brock Holt \o/ sit on the bench, but it would be a shame to have Cecchini accruing service time under these conditions.

        Nice AD reference…..

Also of note is the reports on Cecchini is that his defense needs a bit of work too.

I saw him in Salem last year, and he made one really awesome defensive play. Also, he wore his socks high.

I’m completely ready to love him.

@tfbuckfutter….Mr Holt graduated from STEPHENville High School according to the all-knowing wikipedia.

Why stunt the kids growth for a 2 week stint?

Meanwhile, Stephen Drew grabs yellow pages…looks up tattoo parlors near the Boras Corp training facility.

This is after Boras told him THAT was why he hasn’t signed a deal yet.

    • 18thstreet - Apr 7, 2014 at 2:20 PM

They gave Roberts No. 7. I think that ship is officially sailed.

    • arrow43050 - Apr 7, 2014 at 10:27 PM

Unnamed sources are about to report that at least 3 teams have contacted Boras about Stephen Drew playing both 3rd Base and Shortstop this year and that a signing is imminent.

I just hate to see the Red Sox pick up this piece of Tampa flotsam.

    • 18thstreet - Apr 7, 2014 at 3:34 PM

The tattoos are really hideous. That’s the trivial thing to hate him for.

    • sabatimus - Apr 7, 2014 at 4:38 PM

Better Tampa flotsam than Tampa albatross (cf Carl Crawford).
