Another hour, another Tommy John surgery.

Alden Gonzalez of reports that Angels left-hander Brian Moran — acquired from the Blue Jays in December’s Rule 5 Draft — needs the reconstructive elbow surgery after being diagnosed with a torn ligament.

Moran has a cool 3.06 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 339 strikeouts in 288 career minor league innings and was in the competition for an Opening Day bullpen spot this spring in camp. But he had to be placed on the disabled list March 30 with inflammation in his elbow and further testing revealed the ligament tear.

Moran, 25, will be on the shelf through the early part of the 2015 campaign.

Part of me is going crazy with all these pitchers going down with Tommy John surgeries. But if you look at it in a positive way if it wasn’t for tommy John surgery all these pitchers would most likely be out of the game with these injuries. So atleast the good news is that they can continue their carreers with a year of rehabilitation.

But if not for Tommy John surgery maybe the training and use of pitchers would have advanced to the point where there weren’t so many injuries.

I believe that Moran was a Rule 5 pick from Seattle. Having no recollection of him in the Jays system and no memory of the Jays losing anyone in the Rule 5 Draft, I decided to look him up. I noted that Yahoo Sports says that he was selected from the Jays; however a LA Times, story says that he was selected from the Mariners. I suspect that the LA Times is correct.

Thank goodness Marc Rzepczynski wasn’t the first pitcher to successfully have the surgery. They would’ve just continued calling it reconstructive elbow surgery.
