“Gave proof through the night … that our flag was still … oh, man. Oh jeez.”

Apr 9, 2014, 5:42 PM EDT

From last night’s pregame festivities at Turner Field:

The Braves said today that the flag didn’t actually burn, but rather just had some holes burnt into it. And I’ll agree that this pic is a bit deceiving in that most of that flame is in the foreground. But really, not the best look or omen.

Imagine how outraged Brian McCann would be if he were still in town.

They’re still mad about that whole March-to-the-sea thing?

    • Kevin S. - Apr 9, 2014 at 7:27 PM

They’re probably mad they blew their chance to start over on their traffic patterns.

Wait! I thought we were still pinning everything on ‘Dubya.’

    I burn one every day.

This was a planned memorial to William Tecumseh Sherman.

    • historiophiliac - Apr 9, 2014 at 10:40 PM

Or Tecumseh’s Revenge. It’s too early in the year for re-enacting the attack on Ft. McHenry.

Last week I was talking about this in class and my students were shocked to discover where the national anthem came from. That’s always fun.

Wait until they get a load of your take on Kate Smith.

Faulty pyrotechnics setups is the real reason they need to build a new stadium.

Where’s Rick Monday when you need him?

    • 7mantel - Apr 10, 2014 at 7:38 AM

Actually funny ! I guess the people who gave you the thumbs down don’t know what your referencing about !

      • dillongeeescapeplan - Apr 10, 2014 at 10:11 AM

I was surprised it took as long to mention him as it did. You’d think Craig would have made a reference.

We need to take this as a sign of the lord’s wrath and punishment for Fredi batting BJ second all. the. time. The Braves apologize and in penance, benched BJ and put Schafer in today’s lineup.

  9. skerney - Apr 9, 2014 at 7:05 PM

After this fire my worst nightmare is the Braves trade for Fred McGriff, win 104 games and beat the Giants for a playoff spot by 1 game.

  10. rbj1 - Apr 9, 2014 at 8:10 PM

Cardinals would never do that. Braves are a commie front group. Probably it was their executive who wants to shorten games to 7 innings.

Can we get the unburnable flag from Workaholics?

Fire is tyranny, the flag’s made of freedom
    Unburnable flag

    Son of a diddly!

  13. Joe Vecchio - Apr 10, 2014 at 4:14 AM

When they move to Lester Maddox Stadium in a couple of years, the flag burning will be part of the ceremony, and Rick Monday will not be invited.

Off topic: Craig, I have an idea for an article. When I was a kid, the strike zone was determined by a player’s height. And if he crouched down in the batter’s box, the zone got even smaller. I specifically remember Ricky Henderson as being the best example of this. Pitchers had a very difficult time throwing him strikes because his strike zone was so small. Maybe you could expand. I don’t know if there was a specific rule change at some point, or why this changed. I’ve never seen this mentioned anywhere, and I read quite a bit.
Personally, I think the way the zone is called today is more fair, since the barrels of the bats are basically the same size for everyone.

What is it with the Barves and flags? If they’re not flying them upside down, they’re setting them on fire. :-)

    • renaado - Apr 10, 2014 at 10:01 AM

      It’s an accident 😦.

      • nbjays - Apr 10, 2014 at 10:20 AM

Apparently even a smiley emoticon is not an effective substitute for a sarcasm font around here.

Yesterday there was an article about ARod and now this. It can’t be a coincidence.
