Cardinals extend general manager John Mozeliak through 2018

The Cardinals announced this morning that they have given a two-year contract extension to senior vice president and general manager John Mozeliak. He’s now signed through 2018.

This is actually the second straight year that Mozeliak has received an extension from the Cardinals. He was given a three-year deal last February. They know a good thing when they have it.

Here’s part of the press release from the team:

“Over the last six seasons Mo has done an outstanding job leading our baseball operations,” said Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. “By extending Mo’s contract with the club, we look forward to continuing our approach which emphasizes excellence at the Major League level, supported by a strong player procurement and player development program.”

It’s hard to think of someone more deserving. Since taking over for Walt Jocketty after the 2007 season, Mozeliak has helped make the Cardinals the model franchise for the sport. With their excellent player development system, their run of success likely isn’t coming to an end anytime soon.

Well Done!!! Perhaps his smartest move was NOT resigning Albert (and I was hurt by it at the time).
    Go Cards!!

No brainer–the man is a master.

This is good news. Hopefully, they are able to also retain members of scouting and development all up and down the organization…or, at least, not experience an unusually high rate of loss due to poaching of personnel. So far, the seem to have done just fine after Luhnow left and recruited a number of members from the organization.

Probably the best GM in the league, I wish he ran my team

He’s definitely a fine GM in the Ruben Amaro mold (yes, I’m a disgruntled Phillies fan who’s being somewhat sarcastic).

So what you are saying is that you expect Amaro to march into the owner’s office first thing Monday Morning and to get a similar extension to 2018.

    Good news.

I suspect this will be his last extension as GM, he’s made no bones about wanting a new challenge at some point and 12 years is a helluva run.

He’ll be running the Cards (or another club) at some point post 2018.

I am surprised teams don’t try and go after the Cards scouting more often. Entice them with more money then what they are making, because they are obviously doing a great job with their drafting.
