Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman left tonight’s game against the Braves with an injured thumb after jamming it diving back into second base on a pick-off attempt. It was initially believed to be a jammed thumb, but the Nationals just got some bad news. Per James Wagner of the Washington Post, Zimmerman fractured his thumb and will have to miss four to six weeks.

Anthony Rendon moved to third base to replace Zimmerman in the game and Danny Espinosa took over at second base. That will likely be the Nationals’ plan without Zimmerman going forward.

The Nationals are expected to call up infielder Zach Walters on Sunday, MLB.com’s William Ladson reports.

Nationals are already eliminated from playoffs anyways

    • nickhall2014 - Apr 13, 2014 at 6:59 AM

3rd best record in the majors = eliminated

      • goodellisruiningtheleague - Apr 13, 2014 at 6:03 PM

not being able to beat the Braves = no chance at playoffs.

    That picture is somewhat disturbing

What else is new…. Zimmerman is made of glass. Always hurt. I hate guys like that. Too unreliable. Nats had their chance a few years ago and benched Strausburg. It’s their own fault.

yup, the correlation between these events is clear. #idiot

Ryan Zimmerman is hurt? Stop the presses! In other news, the sky is blue.

    Defense should improve immediately

Starling Marte did the same thing last year. It will be at least an 8 week recovery.

As a Nats fan I like puff my chest out and talk about how great out depth is. I wish I hadn’t done that

I’m tired of the “Ryan Zimmerman is always hurt” argument. He played in 147 games last year and 145 the year before. Lots of guys miss 15-17 games a season and are doing just fine. People love to make the convenient argument, even when it’s inaccurate.
