Cardinals place Joe Kelly on the disabled list

St. Louis has placed right-hander Joe Kelly on the disabled list after he injured his hamstring trying to beat out an infield single Wednesday.

For now the Cardinals haven’t called up a rotation replacement for Kelly, but all signs seem to be pointing toward left-hander Tyler Lyons getting the nod eventually. Lyons is on the same schedule as Kelly, having started yesterday at Triple-A, and the 26-year-old fared reasonably well in 53 innings of action with the Cardinals last season.

If Kelly were out for an extended period of time it’s possible that the Cardinals would consider shifting Carlos Martinez from the bullpen to the rotation, but it doesn’t sound like that’ll be happening for now.

Per, Cards recalling right-handers Eric Fornataro and Jorge Rondon from Memphis.

      Yep, confirmed by Derrick Goold.

Sounds like it’s bullpen protection til Monday with Lyons likely being promoted Monday to make the start in NY.

Or…(and I hope) – it also sounds as though Kelly will miss at least 3 starts and Martinez could be moved into the rotation if Eric Fornataro and Jorge Rondon prove trustable over the next 4 games…

      Intriguing for sure.

I don’t know about Martinez starting this early…It’s something we’d all love (including me), but at this point Martinez is your go-to 8th inning guy, who might even come in in the 7th if necessary. Why change that? If Kelly is out, say, 3 starts at most, then I think they would be fine with Lyons starting those games for him. Martinez could always come in for long relief if needed. Then, when Kelly comes back, Martinez will have remained in the bullpen where he’s been without having to worry about him starting game or two then going back to the bullpen. It’s a whole different story if Kelly was out for the year and you need a 5th starter. Then, it’s Martinez. I just don’t see them rushing Martinez to the rotation too soon when you know Kelly will most likely return in a couple weeks.

This is definitely a 1st world problem. The fact is, the Cardinals have the luxury of choosing which prospect they want to start.
