Blue Jays closer Casey Janssen began a minor-league rehab assignment by throwing a scoreless inning Tuesday at Single-A, but now Gregor Chisholm of reports that he’s been “temporarily shutdown” with more back soreness.

Janssen has been on the disabled list since late spring training with a strained lower back and abdomen, opening the door for Sergio Santos to take over as Toronto’s closer.

Last season Janssen saved 34 games with a 2.56 ERA and he’s got a combined 2.80 ERA in 241 innings since 2010, so the closer gig will presumably be waiting for him when he returns, but now it sounds like it might be a while.

It is much more important that he gets well. Besides Santos, Delabar is also quite capable of closing games.

The Jays will also play it safe with Reyes. The weather in Cleveland on Friday will probably be bad, so Reyes is unlikely to be activated until Saturday. Rasmus is scheduled to DH in the first game today. Lind gets another day off. I understand that the Jays can use a 26th man in game 2. That extra player will probably be Gose. If Lind has to go on the DL, Gose would probably replace him on the 25 man roster.

I would not presume that the closer gig will be waiting for Janssen when he returns from injury. He may be rusty or ineffective at first. Besides that Santos is a fine reliever (when healthy) and was the closer before he lost the role to Janssen.
