Russell Martin challenges Martin Maldonado to a fight for charity

Apr 21, 2014, 7:10 PM EDT

Russell Martin AP AP

The Brewers and Pirates got involved in a nasty brawl yesterday afternoon in Pittsburgh after outfielder Carlos Gomez flipped his bat on a triple, which ticked off starter Gerrit Cole. Martin Maldonado was right in the middle of the skirmish and landed a punch on Travis Snider, who showed up to the ballpark today with a shiner and a cut under his left eye. MLB will issue punishments in the coming days, but Snider’s teammate, Russell Martin, still wants Maldonado to see his comeuppance.

This, of course, will never happen, but it’s clear that emotions are still running high here. Anyway, here’s what Maldonado had to say about Martin’s challenge:

The Pirates will play the Brewers in Milwaukee for a three-game series beginning on May 13. This likely isn’t the last we have heard of this situation.

Another pointless chapter in a seemingly pointless event from a game in which the media feels it necessary to keep beating a dead horse. It was a stupid 5 minutes. Let’s move on. That includes tough guy Russell Martin.

    • apkyletexas - Apr 21, 2014 at 10:48 PM

As a Pirates fan, I can tell you that the fact that this Bucs team is finally growing a set of balls after years of being thrown at and pushed around by this team and the Reds IS news.

      Very welcome news.

I can see that since the moment Ike Davis arrived, this club has had a markedly different attitude. I don’t know – maybe the dude is a bit of a leader?

And regarding the Snider comment in the article – it’s only fair to point out that the only reason he had that shiner was because Maldonado sucker-punched him with a flying leap from behind, while Snider was punishing Gomez on the ground.

      • wiscotom - Apr 22, 2014 at 2:48 AM

After Snider came off the bench to the side of Gomez. Don’t walk into a fight and cry when you get hit.

      • shawndc04 - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:18 AM

How was he sucker punched from behind if he has a shiner and a cut under his left eye? From watching the video it appears that Maldonado hit him with a right hand dead on.

      • estcoast1 - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:50 PM

Hey Shawn, or rather idiot… If you can’t see Snider turned to the side with his attention on someone else, you’re a homer.

    • rrsm53 - Apr 22, 2014 at 7:18 AM

What is Gomez besides a wannabe superstar that will never happen until he pulls his head out of his backside. Someone is going to drill him in the running lights and everyone will be all upset and want the person who does it banned for life and no one will put the blame exactly where it belongs which is sqaurely on the shoulders of Gomez and the Brewers Organization.

He is talented but that only goes so far, maybe if he is sat down for 30 games by MLB or his own team he might get the message. I am not excusing what Cole did he was a turd for going after the guy just pitch, you through him the meatball and he crushed it, but put your big boy panties on an not your sister’s panties instead and pitch better next time.

      • rednuthatch - Apr 22, 2014 at 12:22 PM

I tried to follow your arguement. You seem to think Gomez was out of line for being upset that Cole came over & foul-mothed him once he was on 3rd base. And you want the Brewers to sit Gomez for 30 games because he took offense to being attacked by some Pirates coming off the bench (apparently there weren’t enough of them on the field already). And somehow this is all Gomez’ fault because Cole is thin-skinned. Do I have this right? Trying to follow this logic I still don’t see how Gomez is at fault for being attacked both verbally & physically by various Pirates. Perhaps you can spell it out for me, ’cause I’m just not seeing it.

All those calling for the old white guys to accept the new passionate DR players need to understand something…Martin is just a passionate baseball player that is misunderstood. You should appreciate his culture and his passion…not talk about how you think he isn’t handling the situation “the right way.”

Oh, yeah…just in case you couldn’t tell, the above comment was mostly sarcasm.

    • proudlycanadian - Apr 21, 2014 at 7:57 PM

Martin is a Canuck who grew up watching hockey fights.

      • tbird05 - Apr 21, 2014 at 8:21 PM

Like I said, we should celebrate his perspective. We shouldn’t judge just because we think we know best. That is just the way Canuck’s are…no need to pile on the guy because he “appears” more intense or emotional than the next guy. Instead, celebrate him for being willing to express his different perspective in a baseball world that is entirely to concentrated on unwritten rules. Geez…I mean who couldn’t understand and sympathize with where the guy is coming from?

    • roundballsquarebox24 - Apr 21, 2014 at 8:34 PM

Not sure whether or not this was directed at my earlier comments on other posts, but if it is: I was not and am not asking anybody to understand the passion and culture of anybody. Obviously, many people are going to refuse to consider the idea that maybe their way isn’t the only way. But, that is okay. I was simply stating my beliefs for people who do appreciate a thoughtful and humble opinion. I don’t believe that I am right. I do, however, appreciate the people who, even though their opinion about this differs from mine, can have an educated discussion on the topic without imposing their thoughts on me, or thinking that they are absolutely right and I am wrong. If this was not directed at me, I apologize, because I am the one who was on here speaking about Dominican players and their culture.

      • tbird05 - Apr 21, 2014 at 8:41 PM

Apology accepted. I appreciate your comments, but my post was not directed at you.

Please let there be another brawl next time they play. I can’t get enough of idiots fighting idiots.

So you love reading the comments here then, I assume…

      • fleaman1381 - Apr 21, 2014 at 8:09 PM

The comments here are pretty good. But the real “idiots fighting idiots” is on the profootballtalk side…

  5. fleaman1381 - Apr 21, 2014 at 8:10 PM

As much as I hate to say it… I would give a few bucks to charity to see this fight.

  6. sandrafluke2012 - Apr 21, 2014 at 8:15 PM

    George Zimmerman vs DMX first

    • koufaxmitzvah - Apr 21, 2014 at 9:08 PM

The real Sandra Fluke could beat the crap out of you with one arm tied behind her back.

      • sandrafluke2012 - Apr 21, 2014 at 10:35 PM

Aww. Poor Jew defending a spoiled brat that wants the taxpayer to pay for her lifestyle. Want free condoms? Go to another college

      • koufaxmitzvah - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:12 AM

Haha. You have to resort to anti-Semitism because you’ve been proven as a coward hack impersonating a woman 1000x more successful than you will ever be. Your loserness is a gift that keeps on giving, Hoser.

      • [citation needed] fka COPO - Apr 21, 2014 at 10:48 PM

Let’s see, she was talking about her friend, not herself. She didn’t want condoms, she wanted birth control, which has a lot more medical benefits to women then just contraception.

      • infieldhit - Apr 21, 2014 at 10:51 PM

This is so two years ago.

      • babyfarkmcgeezax - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:46 AM

It was a fluke that sandrafluke2012 was born. It’s a shame sandrafluke2012’s mom apparently didn’t have access to birth control.

      • sandrafluke2012 - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:58 AM

Hey idi0t. I’m jewish. Start being an individual, and stop putting people in groups. And pay for your own healthcare

      • koufaxmitzvah - Apr 22, 2014 at 12:00 PM

Hey Moron. No one respects you. And it doesn’t take much scratch of the surface to realize you used the word Jew as an insult. Maybe you know so little about women and sex because you know absolutely nothing about women or sex.

  7. jwbiii - Apr 21, 2014 at 8:25 PM

We’re moving into Danny Bonaduce/Jose Canseco territory here. Nothing good will come of this.

  8. mikhelb - Apr 21, 2014 at 8:40 PM

Somewhere I read years ago that Martin Maldonado used to be pretty good at boxing, one though “cannuck” is nothing when facing somebody who knows how to box properly; in a brawl probably Martin would stand a chance avoiding getting hit but once Maldonado lands a punch it would be over with a single shot. Snyder’s face appeared to be in a bad state after a single hit.

If indeed is true what i read about Maldonado being a boxer, it wouldn’t be a fair fight for Martin.

  9. musketmaniac - Apr 21, 2014 at 9:29 PM

wow canuk, and latin ball players. Reminds me of a movie line. YOUNGBLOOD where Rob Lowes older brother taking Rob Lowe to play Canadian minor league hockey. ` watch out for yourself. Up here, your just another wet back crossing the border!`

  10. disgracedfury - Apr 21, 2014 at 9:59 PM

Gerrit Cole and Gomez both acted like fools and Travis knocked down Gomez but another two Pirates tried to jump Gomez which is why Weeks tried to pull Travis and why Malanado sucker punched Travis. It was a gang up on Gomez.

Cole should have fought Gomez and not talk trash and then walk away.Again pumping fists and flipping bats isn’t showing anybody up.

    • johngaltwho - Apr 22, 2014 at 11:03 AM

Gomez did nothing wrong. NOTHING. Pirates made a big deal over nothing in the mistaken belief that starting a fight indicates some form of competitive fire and serves to motivate the team and the hometown fans. It doesn’t. It makes you look like a loser and there is some poetic justice when you do just that – lose.

      • billybawl - Apr 22, 2014 at 2:56 PM

Swung his helmet in a brawl?

  11. infieldhit - Apr 21, 2014 at 10:52 PM

The stipulation should be that the winner gets to keep the name “Martin.”

  12. advantageschneider - Apr 22, 2014 at 12:29 AM

You can go ahead and write off the Pirates this season. Back when the brewers were turning it around La Russa and the Cardinals would play similar mind games with Ned Yost, and he always fell for it. Mentally weak, that’s what it is. You can’t play winning baseball if you are also trying to settle imaginary scores at the same time. Have fun in 2015 Pirate fans, your 2014 season is toast.

  13. beermakers - Apr 22, 2014 at 12:40 AM

Maybe Russell and the Pirates should challenge the Brewers to in a baseball game.

They had some tight games, over the weekend and lost, and I think that irritated Cole and the Pirates more than Gomez: “showing them up” there were at least a half dozen ball the Bucs were admiring that landed in play over the weekend., if they weren’t caught at the warning track.

That didn’t bother the Brewers at all cuz their head was focused on the task at hand, not who is doing what with their bat and or they exit the batters box.

PS. Gomez reminds of Pedro Cerrano, I think that guy has smelled or licked his bat at least 6 times this season.

  14. beermakers - Apr 22, 2014 at 12:46 AM

Gomez reminds of Pedro Cerrano, Gomez has smelled his bat a half dozen times this season, and has some intense emotion. Has anyone seen a weirder series than the Brewers Pirates in recent memory? Crew win with 4 Errors Maldonado tearing the cover off a ball, then trying to unload on a Pirates in a Brawl. Braun being great in late game spots.

OOOOGH a twitter war by proxy. Cub reporter instagates new conflict with pitt cacher vs mil….Then some vague ESPN reporter( McCalvy) tweets maldonado declined to respond, then quoted maldonado, ” I don`t know what to say about it”…… Perhaps finaly two things happend 1 travis snider the first pitt player attacking frome the doughout , ended with snider left with a black eye and a cut under his eye….2 That was the best punch in a brawl with MLB, Hands down.

  16. hansob - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:07 AM

Proof as always that everything sounds a little bit better when you put “for charity” at the end of it.

Now I’m off to drag race on busy streets…. for charity.

    • sportsdrenched - Apr 22, 2014 at 9:21 AM

Then I shall have Beer Drinking & Baseball Watching Contest to raise awareness of Charity Drag Races.

Sign up to sponsor a contestant at this website:

I’m going to be the contrarian. This fight has to happen.

    • The Almighty Cabbage - Apr 22, 2014 at 10:37 AM

I’ll take Gomez, Maldonado and Weeks vs Cole, Martin and Snider in a tag team wrestling match with the stipulation that they have to wear the Mexican wrestling masks.
