B.J. Upton got glasses

Apr 25, 2014, 5:02 PM EST

B.J. Upton has been an atrocious hitter since signing with the Braves. Last year he hit .184/.268/.289 with 151 strikeouts in 446 plate appearances. So far this season he’s hitting .205/.287/.295 with 24 strikeouts in 87 plate appearances. Today, this happened:

You’d think that, after so much suckage, someone with the Braves would have raised the issue of Upton’s eyesight with him before now. As such, I’m a tad skeptical that this is his problem. Or at least his only problem. But hey, at this point anything would be an improvement.

    Strikeout machine

Didn’t you fools get the memo? Under modern Sabermetrics, a high number of strikeouts and low batting average combined with low power numbers are a recipe for a monster new contract.

Upton should have held out this spring for an extra $5 million.

I would like to see more posts devoted to how bad B.J. Upton’s contract is.

    • phillphan - Apr 25, 2014 at 6:47 PM

Craig would only point that issue out if it was the Phillies that gave him that contract and then he played this pathetic

      • schmedley69 - Apr 25, 2014 at 6:49 PM

Yeah, that’s what I was implying. There have been about 100 posts on here bashing Ryan Howard’s contract over the years, but somehow the Braves get a pass for B.J. Upton. Hmmm.

      • Alex K - Apr 25, 2014 at 9:00 PM

Ryan Howard got his contract multiple years before he was a free agent. BJ Upton got his as a free agent. These two situations aren’t apples to apples.

Upton has an AAV of 15.05MM while Howard’s is $25MM.

Howard’s contract started at 32 while Upton’s started at 28.

B.J Upton is overpaid. His contract still isn’t as bad as Ryan Howard’s.

Don’t forget the Uggla contract also.

B.J. may have been told, but resisted the idea of getting glasses. Sometimes, denial can be a strong deterrent to doing things we should do. It might be as simple as the light finally going on in his head–hey, maybe I need glasses!

Or, he doesn’t. Let’s see him actually wear glasses at the plate for a while, and see if his BA improves.

Maybe someone finally pointed out that glasses might be ugly, but hitting .205 is Ugly (and doing it while making eleventy bajillion dollars is fUgly.)

I’m assuming these are just frames and contain no correctional lenses. Let’s hope these magic beans pay off.

i thought hitters had to have good to exceptional eyesight to pickup the spin of the pitch coming out of the pitcher’s hand, etc. and that a deficit in that area would be competitively fatal ??

    • cur'68 - Apr 25, 2014 at 5:35 PM

Maybe he’s been trying to hit by echolocation? I dunno. Why WOULDN’T he get glasses if he needed them? Seems kinda goofy to me…

      • chacochicken - Apr 25, 2014 at 6:34 PM

He didn’t want people to confuse him with Freddie Freeman.

    • Cris E - Apr 27, 2014 at 4:26 PM

I didn’t get glasses until after college. Difference people mature in different ways.

It worked for Ricky Vaughn. Do you think BJ’s glasses will have a skull and crossbones on them?

    • fleaman1381 - Apr 25, 2014 at 7:37 PM

You beat me to it. Major League references have been all over the past few days.

The one liner on the front page is pure gold!

  8. igglefan - Apr 25, 2014 at 6:46 PM

With glasses he will now clearly see that he is not the only one stealing money and the Uggla is too… nice signings.

This reminds me of an anecdone I heard about Cardinals starter and regular ol 4-eyes Joe Kelly. Kelly wear glasses when he pitches but not when he bats. The reason: When he bats with glasses, he “see the ball too well”, which distracts him at the plate.

…on a related note, Kelly is a career .153 hitter.

BJ just needs to find a better team

  11. mudhead123 - Apr 25, 2014 at 10:15 PM

Did someone just defend BJ Uptons contract? Wow! Is that you Craig?
