Some HBT commenting housekeeping

Apr 28, 2014, 1:30 PM EDT

megaphone

Just two weeks ago I wrote a personal blog post about how, for all of the insanity, ugliness and poor taste of comments sections, they serve a useful purpose. Several useful purposes, actually.

There is a bit of community here among many of you, and I’m glad we can serve as a forum for that. As my landing on an unfortunate Buzzfeed list this morning shows — a lot of my own mistakes are caught by you guys and I’m glad when you point them out. You also challenge my thinking on any number of topics and I welcome that. This is HardballTalk, not Hardball Soliloquy. Interaction is important and it will continue. Comments aren’t going anywhere as long as it’s up to me.

But I gotta tell ya, a lot of you have been real jackasses lately. The crossing of racist, sexist and homophobic lines has increased lately. As has the violation of the more amorphous yet still important standard of simply not being obnoxious to one another. It’s entirely possible to disagree with someone else here without being a jerk. It’s a shame how many of you seem to have forgotten that.

As a result of this, we have carried out a few bannings over the past few days. A couple of them relatively regular commenters. There was no warning or notice to them as this is not a democracy and we can ban whoever we like. We just reached a tipping point with them. We will continue to keep an itchy ban finger for the time being because some people are making it unpleasant for the vast majority of people here who just want to talk about baseball and we won’t tolerate it.

That aside, our commenting rules are and will remain pretty permissive. We don’t shoot down comments or ban commenters simply for disagreeing with us. Or for being idiots. Or for using bad language. Or for being insensitive or controversial. It’s actually good when people argue or disagree about things or when others are taken out of their comfort zone. That’s when you learn things. And no one has the right to go through life without having their sensibilities offended from time to time. The last thing we want is for some phony level politeness, some hyper-orthodoxy or some brand of groupthink to rule the comments. Mix it up, and if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

But really people, clean it up a bit. Be civil to one another. Understand that what may wash in a thread under one of my posts may not wash for the other HBT writers and know that, if you act like a jackass, you’re going to lose your commenting privileges. As always, we won’t tolerate the following:

  • Racism;
  • Misogyny;
  • Homophobia or gay bashing;
  • Antisemitism;
  • Excessive personal attacks on other commenters.

This doesn’t mean you can’t talk about controversial topics. Or argue with people. But be adults about it.

Thanks.

It was a clear black night, a clear white moon Craiggy C was on his blog tryin to consume, some thoughts for the Eve so he could make some fun at the new contacts worn by BJ upton….

Just hit the last blog on the HBT on a mission tryna find posts from Craiggy C, found a blog about race and it’s clear to see the comments parts gonna have con-troversy!

So I clicks the left on the post I wanna read and I saw the comments already totaled a hindered fifty three and.. I posted my thoughts but they were rough I couldn’t even get one little thumbs up…

      • Jason @ IIATMS - Apr 28, 2014 at 4:30 PM

I can’t LOVE this comment more than I already do. I can only count for one thumbs up

      • thebadguyswon - Apr 28, 2014 at 4:49 PM

        God……that was epic. Bravo.

      • El Bravo - Apr 28, 2014 at 5:43 PM

You can’t say you banned regular commenters and then not tell us which ones – c’mon, spill.

    • Craig Calcaterra - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:36 PM

DirtyHarry and NYMets4Ever or whatever his name was are gone.

      • Kevin Gillman - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:53 PM

        what did I miss?

      • missthemexpos - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:03 PM

Now that DirtyHarry has more time on his hands maybe the Blue Jays can invite him up to Toronto sometime to throw out the first ball.

      • nbjays - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:12 PM

        That’d make his head explode.

      • paint771 - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:54 PM

        Thank Christ on DirtyHarry.

While I never really viewed it as my place to say – it’s not my forum – he had long ago crossed the line from trolling to just spamming. I can appreciate a troll – although being vehemently anti-Toronto Blue Jays is kind of weird; it’s like despising almonds or making it your mission to bring Alan Alda’s life to ruin – but it started to be a shame that I’d almost have to just avoid any thread that mentioned the Jays because I knew I’d have to wade through dozens and dozens of DirtyHarry warblegarbles. Which was too bad because some of the usual suspects in Jays threads – cur, proudlycanadian, etc – are some of the most enjoyable posters here.

Now back to the tepid ambivalence Toronto teams ought rightly to inspire!

      • anxovies - Apr 28, 2014 at 3:02 PM

Alan Alda deserves everything he gets.

      • cur'68 - Apr 28, 2014 at 3:03 PM

By Dog Paint771, I’d be furious with your characterization of My Boys if it weren’t so spot on. DANG YOUR OILY HIDE! Dang it to HECK!

Anyhow, I see persecuting my hapless team the equivalent to having it in for Micael J. Fox, NOT Alan Alda. Capable of supreme coolness once in a while, but a kind of mediocre work history most of the time. Having it in for Alan Alda would be the equivalent of spiting the Orioles, I think.

      • nbjays - Apr 28, 2014 at 3:14 PM

Paint, I must admit here and now that I despise almonds, but only because they induce an anaphylactic reaction and I tend to hate things that attempt to kill me.

And Cur, the Jays will never be hapless, unless they DFA J.A. Happ.

        Sorry, couldn’t resist.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 3:15 PM

Nah, Alan Alda is the Mets. Totally kicked ass in the 80s, with a return back almost to the top in 2006.

      • scoutsaysweitersisabust - Apr 28, 2014 at 3:56 PM

Been a long time coming. Glad to see this put into action.

      • raysfan1 - Apr 28, 2014 at 6:24 PM

Don’t worry, aresachaela. You’ve never attacked anyone in these articles. I’ll get banned before you do.

        Bravo.

      • aresachaela - Apr 28, 2014 at 9:47 PM

        Whew! Girl power FTW XD!!

  3. davidpom50 - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:37 PM

It seems that the uptick in racist comments around here have related directly to an increase in the number of articles about those topics. It’s important to talk about these issues, and I hope that the HBT staff’s more frequent use of the banhammer will keep the discussions on topic and reasonable.

    • jjschiller - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:29 PM

Dead on, couldn’t agree with you more.

The dual-arguments “If you don’t tolerate my intolerance, its YOU that’s really intolerant” and “If you didn’t want me spew vile racism, you shouldn’t have acknowledged racism in the first place” are particularly obnoxious to me, and are, at their core, attempts to stifle genuine debate.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:43 PM

        Post of the day.

    • Francisco (FC) - Apr 28, 2014 at 4:08 PM

Hmm, I first read your moniker as davidporn50. Either I need a new prescription or a new mind.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 4:32 PM

        I’ve done that before.

      • DelawarePhilliesFan - Apr 28, 2014 at 4:43 PM

That was how I ended up on this site in the first place!

  4. joenash72 - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:42 PM

OK, I’m man enough to admit, I had to look up the definition of “misogyny”.

“the hatred of women by men”

So, what is the vice versa of misogyny, and is it allowed?

    • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:46 PM

Misandry, and please find an example of it being used in these comments before asking silly false-equivalency questions.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:53 PM

Let me clarify, before I get jumped on – yes, misandry is bad. It doesn’t get explicitly called out because in practice, it is utterly dwarfed by misogyny, especially in the sports world. If that was a serious question, there was your serious answer.

If this was a “herp-da-derp, teh wimmez are just as sexist as men” line, well, I consider myself put on alert by this post, but we’ll settle for a hearty “Grow up.”

      • nbjays - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:06 PM

I dunno… Historiophiliac’s giddy fascination with HBPiD could be construed as misandrist (is that a word?), or it could just be that she has a cruel sense of humor. :-)

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:08 PM

Sadism and misandry are two different things.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:34 PM

Everybody loves a good HBPiD. Don’t pretend you didn’t laugh.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:41 PM

And, I only use the pincers on the chicken.

      • stlouis1baseball - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:45 PM

We are good Man! I just took Joe’s question as sincere and it looked like you simply dismissed him.
For what it’s worth…my answer to ‘A’ is a loud “Hell no!”
And ‘B’? That made me laugh. For some strange reason.
Sorry Kevin. I was trying to defend you (albeit in a passive-aggressive manner).

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:53 PM

Don’t apologize. I get aggravated with you sometimes, but I’ve never questioned your sincerity. If anything, I did feel my response needed to be further expanded, and you gave me that opening.

Now, if only we could get you to respond in the right nesting… :-P

    • ditto65 - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:47 PM

Should have had your wife look it up. And get you a sammich.

      /sarcasm

      • aceshigh11 - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:50 PM

        OVER THE LINE! BANNED!!!!!!!!!

    • Pat Richardson - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:48 PM

Opposite would be misandry, which is largely not a real thing. I would encourage it, as it’s usually good for some laughs.

      • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:52 PM

“misandry, which is largely not a real thing.”

You and I obviously did not attend the same crunchy liberal arts college.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:56 PM

You and I obviously did not participate in the same business environment and political structure.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:57 PM

More specifically, misandry rarely, if ever, has any actual impact on the lives of men. The same can’t be said for misogyny and the fortunes of women.

      • Pat Richardson - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:02 PM

Kevin S., that was more what I was trying to say. Misandry is real, but claims of misandry in order to retort against or shut down a feminist argument or ideology are pretty wildly misguided. I would encourage someone to claim misandry in the comments section (i.e. tying it into a larger comment about the “wussification of the game” or some other such nonsense) so that we can all laugh at them. I enjoy laughing.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:06 PM

Yeah, I feel you. I was replying to sabathia. This is one of the downfalls of comments only nesting three levels down.

      • historiophiliac - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:44 PM

Okay, everyone who’s been called a “whore” for giving their opinion here on HBT raise your hand. Just me?

      • historiophiliac - Apr 28, 2014 at 3:13 PM

Aaaaaand, I still win the thumbs down!

/sticks fingers in pits, pulls out and smells, does victory pose

    • [citation needed] fka COPO - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:49 PM

      is it allowed?

      What do you think?

    • stlouis1baseball - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:16 PM

      Joe:
Please ignore Kevin’s dimissive “I am better than you reply.”
He is not normally the ‘holier-than-thou’ type so I am going to chaulk it up to him having a bad Monday. Personally, I find your honesty refreshing as HBT. It’s a stark constrast to posters who seem to be far more interested in putting on aires and otherwise trying to one-up each other.
It is funny…when you asked about the antonym of “misogyny” there is one poster in particular who immediately came to my mind.

      • stlouis1baseball - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:30 PM

Jeesh people! I was referring to Philiac’s HPBiD fascination.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:35 PM

Hey, my response was only half dismissive!

I was actually giving a straight answer when it occurred to me that could have been a MRA reverse-sexism complaint, so I channeled my inner Schrodinger (and if anybody can show me how to put the umlaut in there for future reference, I’d be forever grateful) and answered it as if it was an honest question and if it was a troll.

There are a whole host of groups for which derogatory comments would be a no-go that Craig did not list – clearly, he highlighted the ones that have been an issue. Do you really feel that A) misandry has been prevalent enough in the comments to warrant being called out by name or B) that we need to through and ask Craig what groups it is or is not okay to post virulently bigoted attacks against instead of using a dollop of sense and expanding the list to other like groups?

      • yahmule - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:44 PM

Hack it with a simple copy and paste.

        Schrödinger.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:50 PM

Ugh, do I have to be forever grateful to you now? Dammit.

        ;-)

      • stlouis1baseball - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:53 PM

        Lol! Not at all.
        I expect nothing in return.
        Until I need something.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:54 PM

Grr, again, first-world nested-comment problems. I was talking to yahmule.

      • stlouis1baseball - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:56 PM

Hahaha! Funny stuff. I figured it out after reading your initial “nesting” post.

      • joenash72 - Apr 28, 2014 at 3:09 PM

Wow, wasn’t expecting my comment to draw that much attention :-)

I will admit, looking at it now, I guess I was “trolling” but not intentionally. Well, maybe a little bit…..

Honestly had never heard of “misandry”. Had seen “misogyny” just didn’t know exactly what it meant without looking it up. Learn something new everyday ;-)

I thought I was testing out the ban hammer, as it relates to misogyny, by starting my post with “I’m man enough to admit……”. Still here (so far).

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 3:44 PM

joe, that comment didn’t even come close to testing the ban hammer.

Like I said, my initial reaction was to take your comment at face value. It probably isn’t fair to you, but unfortunately I was reminded of many others who have posted similarly under the guise of curiosity, hence my dual-faceted reply.

  5. drs76109 - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:48 PM

      • yahmule - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:49 PM

My favorite thing is when someone posts something sarcastic on a controversial topic thread like racism, and they might even be agreeing with me, but I’m too stupid to get their inference so I wind up calling them an asshole. Happens so much I don’t even get embarrassed anymore.

      • lukedunphysscienceproject - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:56 PM

I came here drunk one time, was not funny, took off after one of the best commenters on here despite being 100% wrong, and got rightfully gutted for it by other commenters, amassing more thumbs down for two posts than I had for my entire commenting career previously. I actually came back the next morning and admitted I was wrong.

Next time I drink maybe I’ll just hang out at PFT. No one there will know the difference.

Anybody claimed “Itchy Ban Finger” for the name of a punk rock group yet?

    • someguyinva - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:08 PM

I might use it for a team name if I ever get back to playing fantasy baseball.

    • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:10 PM

Ironically, Ichiban means “first” in Japanese, but typing “First” in the comments will get your comment deleted.

      • brewcrewchamps - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:58 PM

Ichiban Finger. Best band name ever

      • someguyinva - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:22 PM

Careful, downvotes; that acronym might be a mating call in Dothraki, Klingon, or Welsh, so tread carefully.

    • sabathiawouldbegoodattheeighthtoo - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:31 PM

      Jon Rauch, is that you?

  10. tovarfan - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:50 PM

Craig, Glad you raised this issue. I enjoy reading people comments but really get turned off with all of the stupidness of the commenters at time. As you said, it’s great to get multiple points of view and we all learn from that but do it tastefully.

  11. shawndc04 - Apr 28, 2014 at 1:53 PM

I really can’t fault you on this decision, Craig, and I’m a card-carrying member of the ACLU. Some of the comments were beyond the pale and had no value, other than being insulting, whatsoever.

    • jjschiller - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:33 PM

I like that 4 people down-voted civil liberties. That really says America to me.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:41 PM

“For the record: yes, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU. But the more important question is why aren’t you, Bob? Now, this is an organization whose sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights, so it naturally begs the question: Why would a senator, his party’s most powerful spokesman and a candidate for President, choose to reject upholding the Constitution? If you can answer that question, folks, then you’re smarter than I am, because I didn’t understand it until a few hours ago.”

      • historiophiliac - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:48 PM

It sometimes gets you out of jury duty.

The ALCU like all organizations, have their own interpretations of things that I may or may not agree with. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. So while I love the concept of “defending the Bill of Rights” that doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing to you and me, everytime. Also, the ALCU is known for supporting concepts that are not explicitly in the Bill of Rights. So “supporting the ACU” doesn’t automagically mean someone supports the Bill of Rights more than someone else.

See those little tick marks at the beginning and end of the post? Those are called “quotation marks.” They mean that I’m reproducing something said by somebody else. In this case, a part from a kick-ass speech in a really good movie. You should check it out some time.

      • Professor Fate - Apr 29, 2014 at 3:56 AM

        KS-
“The American President,” from 1995, one of my all-time favorites. Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, Richard Dreyfuss (“Bob”), Wendie Malick.

President Shepherd is “liberal” and his main protagonist, Sen. Bob Rumson, a “conservative,” but it’s mostly about Shepherd’s romance of a lobbyist (Sydney Ellen Wade). Nevertheless, some great speechifying:

“I’ve known Bob Rumson for years, and I’ve been operating under the assumption that the reason Bob devotes so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn’t get it. Well, I was wrong. Bob’s problem isn’t that he doesn’t get it. Bob’s problem is that he can’t sell it!”

“…(W)hatever your particular problem is, I promise you, Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who’s to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections.”

While I liked the forward-looking focus on “global warming” nearly 20 years ago, the mistaken belief that banning “assault” rifles and handguns, rather than instituting tighter background checks and perhaps actually funding mental health care, bothered me then as it does now. All in all a movie to make you fantasize that there still might be actual humans posing as politicians.

      • Kevin S. - Apr 29, 2014 at 6:16 AM

Yeah, I wasn’t attempting to suggest that Aaron Sorkin’s written politics are a blueprint for America. It just seemed an appropriate quote given the comment I was responding to.

Craig has always amazed me with his patience. The fact that BabyFark – who does almost nothing but personally attack him – survived is proof of that.

I was really hoping sarahfluke2012 would be on the drop list.

To me, the worst sin on a message board is the poster who refuses to let things go. The ones who insist on posting off topic rants on every thread. I’m pretty sure that’s why Halladay’s Biceps keeps getting run.

    • nbjays - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:16 PM

babyfark, vivabear and nymets are usually the first ones to jump all over Craig with the personal attacks, no matter what he posts. Some people just like to be disagreeable, I guess.

The Bartolo Colon thread, if you’re so inclined. He used it as an excuse to cry about how people were mean and hurt Christie and Limbaugh’s fee-fees. Which, to be fair, I have defended Christie from weight jokes in the past, but then he called yahmule a jerk and tried to take some kind of ethical high ground, so I teed off. When I saw this post go live, I legitimately thought I’d crossed the line and gotten the boot.

As a result of this, we have carried out a few bannings over the past few days. A couple of them relatively regular commenters. There was no warning or notice to them as this is not a democracy and we can ban whoever we like. We just reached a tipping point with them.

I like the use of “we” here, as if there was a meeting of the minds amongst all the writers. I mean come on. How did you find the time between Gleeman searching for brunch locations, Bill retweeting that Ryan Howard tweet, and Craig giving us the ins and outs of the carpool lane at his kid’s school.

DJ dropped the ban hammer didn’t he, and the rest of you were asleep at your respective wheels….

      • paperlions - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:33 PM

Thankfully, the damage a manager can inflict is somewhat limiting. He hasn’t shown drastic signs of pitcher abuse, but his reliance on Carlos as a Swiss Army Get-My-Ass-Out-Of-Trouble Pitcher has the potential to burn the little dude out. It would just be nice to have a guy that helped the team win instead of a guy that the team has to overcome. I thought Matheny could be that guy, but with more and more data….he just seems to be….well, particularly good at making decisions. I guess the fact that he made 10s of millions of dollars playing baseball and was bankrupt not long after he retired probably could have been clue #1 in that regard.

      • indaburg - Apr 28, 2014 at 4:50 PM

        This:

“Any time there is something to discuss or comment on…seems like I don’t see it until the comment section is a complete disaster chock full of stupidity, so I haven’t bothered.”

That’s why I’ve been so silent as of late. I thought I was just getting old. “HBT isn’t what it used to be! Why, back when I was young you could comment on these boards with reasonable people…” I thought perhaps the level of stupidity had remained the same but my intolerance for it had decreased and I simply grew weary of arguing with strangers whose opinion mattered not a whit to me. I see now that objectively speaking, the inmates were running the asylum.

      • paperlions - Apr 28, 2014 at 4:55 PM

Nah, you still got old :-)

The quality of discourse as well as the tendency of these boards to serve as a viable platform for it has severely declined over the last year. We appear to have passed the threshold required to maintain reasonable discussions and have just been swamped by stupidity.

      • umrguy42 - Apr 28, 2014 at 5:25 PM

PL: “Do I need to google it?”

Only with SafeSearch turned on ;p

As far as Matheny goes, a couple days back, I opened the MLB At Bat app to check the score, and I see the news story “Matheny not concerned with lack of offense” (or something like that), and my first (and second, third, fourth…) thought was, “well, maybe he SHOULD be”.

Also PL: “We appear to have passed the threshold required to maintain reasonable discussions and have just been swamped by stupidity.”

        I second that.

    • cur'68 - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:26 PM

I did the same thing. Somehow WE made it through unscathed. How is this possible? I feel like I should write Groucho Marx’s letter of resignation to the Friars’ Club: “I don’t want to belong to any club that would accept me as one of its members”.

      • paperlions - Apr 28, 2014 at 2:40 PM

Well, the more jackwagons there are around the less I tend to comment…just don’t see a reason to argue with stupid people and it is usually hard to have a decent discussion/debate when the stupid person quotient is too high….then again, I have friends that are black, gay, jewish, and female (though, not all at once)….so, of course, by definition I am not racist, homophobic, antisemitic, or misogynistic. :-)
